Great for beginners TO SHAREPOINT, not beginning developers

I'm a SharePoint Infrastructure Engineer who is working on adding some development skills. I purchased this book because of the "Beginning" in the title, but it's not for the beginning I'm coming from. If you're no great shakes at coding, this book will be deficient for you because it covers what is new and/or unique about SharePoint, but not coding basics that would allow you to use those features if you're not already familiar with a language.

So if you're good with C#, JavaScript or Silverlight and you want to get into developing for SharePoint (and have history developing for other web technologies) this would probably be a great book for you. If you're like me, though, and don't have a deep background with any of those languages, you'd be better served buying a different book to learn the language, then coming back to this one to specialize in SharePoint technologies.

Of course, if I'd read the first page I would've gathered that, so I can't really blame the authors. The first sentence under the header "WHO THIS BOOK IS FOR" is (and this is a direct quote):

"Simply put, this book is aimed at the developer who is new to SharePoint."

That's what I get for judging a book by it's cover, I suppose. They could've made the title "Beginning SharePoint 2013 Development, but not development in general," but that's confusing and terrible. Anyway, this review is to help other people avoid my mistake. I'll let you know if I find a book that better fills the need of being an introduction not just to SharePoint, but to programming in general.

I've tried a few other books and have read through more of this one. Another good resource is "Professional SharePoint 2013 Development" but it is also not for the novice programmer, just the novice SharePointer. The Professional development book is significantly more comprehensive, though, and covers a lot of the same material in a different way. If you're getting in to SharePoint development and are already a programmer I might recommend that book, though Beginning development explains some things in a better manner and with better examples.

All that said, there isn't really a good book to take you from no development to SharePoint Developer Extraordinaire. If you're starting from scratch, I recommend learning JavaScript, HTML and CSS. You can use those three technologies to create some great apps using Napa (which is awesome). This book and the Professional book are great supplements to help you become better with SharePoint specifically once you're good with HTML, CSS and JavaScript.

I upgraded my score from three stars to four stars since the book is pretty good for the target audience, and my lack of programming background shouldn't influence me to drag their score down.

So far the best SharePoint 2013 book on the market!!

So far this is the best SharePoint 2013 Development book on the market.

You will get to learn how to develop SharePoint 2013 projects using Visual Studio 2012 and Napa, Microsoft's online IDE for developing Apps for the Cloud.

You get a thorough understanding of what it means to created an Auto-Hosted App, SharePoint Hosted App, or Provider Hosted App. For those who don't know the new "App Model" is a complete paradigm shift from developing for SharePoint 2007 or 2010. By the time you are done with this book you will have the knowledge to start writing apps for SharePoint 2013 in an on-premise environment or for the cloud (Office 365). You will also learn how to write apps that can be deployed to Windows Azure and integrated into SharePoint 2013. You will then get exposure to the completely revamped Client-Side Object Model and REST APIs.

I am about 3/4 done with the book and feel very confident in beginning my development with SharePoint 2013. Buy this book if you are looking to get up to speed quickly with SharePoint 2013. As the other reviewer stated don't be fooled with the "Beginning" in the title. Even if you are a SharePoint 2007 or 2010 veteran you will need to learn the new app model and this is just the place to start. Happy reading!! :)

Not ready for prime time!!

I agree with several of the other reviewers that this book provides good information and insight about SharePoint development. However, if you plan to build the exercises, or download the code, you will be disappointed! It is likely that the book was written before the final version of SharePoint 2013 was released. As such, the directions are no longer valid and the code simply doesn't work. In some cases the directions are also incorrect and leave out important steps, code and variables needed for the examples to work. Unfortunately, the errata hasn't been updated to reflect the necessary changes and a recent download of the code was 'almost' worthless. I waited two months, as it bothers me to write a negative review, but I am doing so in case other customers plan to rely upon this book to quickly meet a project objective. That said, if you have plenty of time, and if you can get the authors to respond to questions on the Blog, this book may provide you with limited value. However, if you expect the code to work and the exercise steps to be complete, then do not buy this book!

An illuminating read on the challenges of parenting in the twenty-first century, the limits of the "tiger" model (Battle Hymn of the Tiger Model by Amy Chua), and the opportunities offered by a parenting style inspired to one of the most wonderfully adaptable, self-reliant and socially connected creatures on earth: dolphins.

In her memoir, Battle Hymn Of The Tiger Mom (Penguin Press, 2011), Yale professor Amy Chua, recorded her personal experience as a mother and the challenges she had to face raising her two daughters. Coming from a strict Chinese family, Chua received a very tough education ('no good grades in school, no toys, no playdates, no boyfriends' kind of upbringing): according to the law professor, her parents' demanding and restrictive strategy was the best gift anybody ever gave to her and she admittedly tried to raise her kids in the same way (without apparent success with one of her daughters, tough). The authoritarian brand of parenting made famous by Chua's provocative memoir proudly excludes playing, choices, even bathroom breaks during piano practice. Her book stirred quite a controversy among critics and readers. Although not intended as a parenting guide, she strongly asserted her point of view about education in this country: "I do believe that we in America can ask more of children than we typically do, and they will not only respond to the challenge, but thrive."

The cultural divide between Western and traditional Chinese parents is as wide as the geographical distance separating them: while we try to respect our children's individuality encouraging them to pursue their own passions and providing a nurturing environment, in many eastern cultures parents believe that the best way to protect their children is preparing them for the future with strict rules and strong work habits. I am a strong supporter of the idea that virtue lies in the middle, not in the extremes.

As a Harvard-trained psychiatrist, researcher, and co-founder of the Youth Culture and Mental Health Fund for the BC Mental Health Foundation, Shimi Kang, M.D. has worked with thousands of people dealing with stress, family conflicts, work-life balance, depression, anxiety, addictions, psychosis, and suicidal thoughts: drawing from her range of expertise and experience, and in response to Chua's brutally honest story of extreme parenting, her guide, The Dolphin Way, argues that motivation as an external imposition doesn't bring lasting results. Chua's "tiger" parenting style (yelling, bribing, punishing) kills self-motivation:

"Pushing, hovering, demanding, and cajoling may get results when tasks are simple, but when tasks become complex, involve creativity, and require critical thinking, these external motivators work poorly. Carrots and sticks can't replace autonomy, mastery, and purpose as the foundation of self-motivation, pleasure, and joy."

And so does the opposite:

"When we motivate via toys, money, or too much praise, we also take away the chance for internal rewards - that amazing dose of dopamine that keeps us feeling happy."

At best, the "tiger" parenting focuses on mastery alone and it works only when the child finds the activity imposed by her/his parents to be important enough for her/him to master it. And even when children of "tiger" parents bolt out of the gates, so to speak, they do it only because of external pressure and will be often passed over by those who experienced a more relaxed approach to academics and extracurricular activities. The "tiger" kids will underperform in the real world; they will more likely develop addictions, self-harm habits, and suicidal tendencies. Action based on external motivation will last only as long as the external pressure, reward, punishing are in place. On the other end of the parenting spectrum, the permissive style (the "jellyfish") will breed irresponsible and impulsive kids, poor relation skills, no respect for authority, poor school/work performance, and risky behaviors. The risks of parenting with an excess of control and micro-managing, or complete lack of guidance, are enormous. Both models destroy curiosity, the very roots of self-motivation.

"I think, at a child's birth, if a mother could ask a fairy godmother to endow it with the most useful gift, that gift should be curiosity", Eleanor Roosevelt used to say. I couldn't agree more with her. Curiosity is linked to our brain's dopamine reward system and fuels our self-motivation for learning: when we look at the world with curiosity, we stop judging and simply engage our thinking brain to observe and interact.

The dolphin-way appears to be the perfect balance between the authoritarian parenting model (the "tiger"), and the permissive style (the "jellyfish"). Dolphins, with all their attributes and qualities, are a powerful metaphor for a successful parenting: they display qualities of intelligence, creativity, learning, communication, and social connection, all traits necessary to fare with success in the shift age. They are social creatures, living and traveling in pods. They teach their young through role modeling, play. and guidance. They're the most altruistic and collaborative animal species, with a brain size second only to humans. The dolphin parenting model is about guiding rather instructing, teaching by example, emphasizing the importance of play, exploration, social bonds, and community values, rather than competition and isolation. All these positive traits are natural to human parenting, but we have lost connection with them because of our imbalanced, over-competing, over-achieving lifestyle.

With a parenting style modeled on the dolphin behavior, discipline is assertive and positive, not restrictive; supportive, not punishing or dismissing. Dolphin parents are clear authority figures (not friends, or personal assistants, helicopters, slaves, drivers) that establisheclear rules and guidelines while responding to the emotional needs of a child. Kang's book offers numerous and practical examples of "dolphin" inspired approaches and communication strategies.

Unlike many other parenting books, The Dolphin Way offers guidance, not instruction, in a perfect dolphin-parenting way: it doesn't add any more tasks to a parent's to-do list. It actually helps eliminate some, clearly illustrating the multiple benefits of such a model:

- being warm and responsive helps children form secure attachments and protects them from internalizing issues such as depression and anxiety

- enforcing limits decreases the chance children will engage in acting out self-destructive behaviors (aggression, interpersonal conflict, drug and alcohol abuse)

- communicating about thoughts and feelings strengthens children's empathy, emotional regulation, and relationship skills

- showing understanding for academic struggles helps children become better problem solvers and learners

- encouraging independence helps children develop self-reliance, a desire to help others, and better emotional health

in defense of Lego...

I wasn't at all impressed with the 'viewpoint' of the author, even though I do agree with the concept of nor over-loading our kids and taking a 'dolphin like' approach to parenting. I will stick to the intro, because it gives (as an intro should) a good preview of the mind-set of the author; in this case I find it a bit dogmatic. She begins the book by telling the story of the day it dawned on her that her son would be happier playing freely than playing the piano (they never went to piano again... that I find to bit extreme, especially since she later claims she would like her children to appreciate music... mix messages, to say the least). This incident is followed by a trip to a toy store where she is disillusioned by the way Lego has evolved (i.e. it's no longer a box with colorful bricks but rather Lego come in different themed sets). Her take on Lego is so skewed and narrow-minded and it unfortunately follows suite with the rest of the intro (I couldn't read page to page the rest of the book, it lost me) Lego, she decided, is no longer about imagination and creativity. She bases that on the difficulty she, her 6 yr old and husband had with following the complicated instructions. Her outlook did not allow her to consider that following these complicated instructions builds a different set of skills, such as persistence and understanding how things are made; that step by step is the only way to go, from the ground up, the sense of accomplishment, that practice matters; And crucially that once you are done building based upon the instructions you are free to create! And kids, as well as adults DO create amazing structures, machines, whole worlds with today's diverse Lego sets. It s magical! or rather, i CAN be and it should be if you allow your IMAGINATION to take place, and suspend judgement for anything that is not 'as good as it used to be'. So she concludes that it'd be better if she let her kid out in the garden to dig up worms... ((Which is fun. But it's not comparable to Lego building). And i think this viewpoint provides an good example for her overall world-view: Just like with Lego she romanticizes the old ways of her parents' as well as her carefree childhood in a way that feels forced and simplistic.
However, if you are a new parents who has never thought about parenting, who feels under pressure to 'perform' in your new role, and are basically clueless about it, it could give some food for thought, and an alternative to the 'tiger way' (what's up with these animal metaphors anyway!?). But be open-minded, or at least critical while reading an opinionated piece (this, or any other piece).
I should say that i m not your 'average reader' for this kind of books (I m a developmental psychologist) since I have read many of the classics. I would say you are MUCH better off going with writers that are recognized experts on parenting and have been tested throughout the years for their solid advice and approach, such as Montessori, Piaget, Winnicott etc.

Not your typical parenting book by any means-- The Dolphin Way reads more like a study in psychology with tips and tricks than your every-day-run-of-the-mill "self-help book". While some of her advice and focus is more applicable to different age groups than where I am as a parent at the moment (a toddler and one in-utero vs. school-aged kids), much of Kang's insight and guidance is fascinating and really "clicks" for every day behaviours and habits.

Kang reminds us that we all know the secret to parenting. There is no one way to parent properly, but we have to listen to our intuition rather than forcing a "right way" on ourselves and our kids because that's what everyone else is doing. We need to remember to act not out of fear and the need to control, but rather based on guidance and showing our kids what they need to "figure it out". If you've ever taken a basic psych course and learned about Maslow's hierarchy of needs, that's what we're talking about here: self-motivation and self-actualization for vitality.

If you're looking for a new perspective on parenting that serves as more of a reminder than of a to-do list that makes you feel guilty about your parenting, then I highly recommend this book.

In California of the near future, when the U.S. is only a "Burbclave" (city-state), the Mafia is just another franchise chain (CosaNostrastet Pizza, Incorporated) and there are no laws to speak of, Hiro Protagonist follows clues from the Bible, ancient Sumer and high technology to help thwart an attempt to take control of civilization--such as it is. When he logs on to Metaverse, an imaginary place entered via computer, Hiro encounters Juanita Marquez, a "radical" Catholic and computer whiz. She warns him off Snow Crash (a street drug named for computer failure) and gives him a file labeled Babel (as in Tower of Babel). Another friend, sp ok/pk Da5id, who ignores Juanita's warning, computer crashes out of Metaverse into the real world, where he physically collapses. Hiro, Juanita, Y.T. (a freewheeling, skateboard-riding courier) and sundry other Burbclave and franchise power figures see some action on the way to finding out who is behind this bizarre "drug" with ancient roots. Although Stephenson ( Zodiac ) provides more Sumerian culture than the story strictly needs (alternating intense activity with scholarship breaks), his imaginative juxtaposition of ancient and futuristic detail could make this a cult favorite.

Hiro Protagonist, delivery boy for Uncle Enzo's CosaNostra Pizza and freelance hacker in the virtual reality called the Metaverse, tangles with religious cultists, computer virus/drug dealers, and a human bomb known as the Raven in a freewheeling first novel that picks up where cyberpunk left off. Rapid-fire action scenes interspersed with snippets of Sumerian mythology and vignettes of a franchise-dominated 21st century combine to produce a heady, surrealistic pastiche of the not-so-distant future. Satiric sf at its best, this novel is highly recommended for all libraries.

Amazingly good

“Snow Crash” is a great science fiction cyberpunkish novel. Brilliant, exhilarating, very funny, highly intelligent, very well informed, and at the same time highly pessimistic about the future. It imagines a very bleak future in which the United States federal government has been reduced to a few fortified areas, there is no rule of law, most of the country is dominated by a small number of criminal corporations, one of the most powerful ones being the Mafia. This picture of the future is not completely consistent, but overall the novel is excellent.

The main characters are a 30 year-old man, who is apparently the best samurai swordsman in the world, one of the best hackers or software programmers (Stephenson uses the words more or less interchangeably; one must keep in mind that this book was written in 1992), and also a Deliverator, which is a fancy name for a pizza delivery man working for the Mafia, and a 15 year-old girl (very full of “attitude”) that works as a “Kourier” (messengers that deliver packages riding some super high-tech skates). The Mafia apparently controls all the Domino-like pizza-to-go business in the country. The whole setup of the novel should make smile even to the most cantankerous readers.

A book like this is hard to rate

A book like this is hard to rate. It is seminal to the cyber punk genre, so any slight of its cliches or stereotypes may just be a backwards-looking judgment. However, the book has a very misguided sense of plot. While there are great ideas and entertaining moments in the book, the tendons that hold the story together are kinda flimsy. The story exists to get the characters from one cool moment to another.

Speaking of, this book lives and dies on the "Rule of Cool". Neo-punk skateboards out of the FBI headquarters while telling them to suck it? Check. Motorcycle race-battle in cyberpsace? Check. Protagonist hero literally named "Hiro Protagonist", who is also one of the architects of cyberspace and one of the best swordsmen of all time, check. You roll your eyes at the silliness of it all, and yet there's a kernel of intellectual thought at the core of the story.

That core orbits around the idea of language and the power it has to actually gestate ideas within people. The book takes the idea to the literal extreme, positing a universal language that actually can program people like a virus. Take that for what you want. But, the concepts underneath the silly drive to make everything/everyone "cool as hell " are intriguing.

However, the ending is a massive letdown. I had to check my book twice to make sure I wasn't missing pages, since it just kinda...ends. No closure and no real pay-off for the concepts of the novel or the characters that he built. However, I quickly got over it since the characters existed as either conduits of plot or puppets to be cool.

Another Stephenson masterpiece, to be enjoyed over and over again, at least once a year.

Whatever I could or would write would be euphemistic; even the most lavish praise; the most groveling compliments; the most blatant and overdone positive review; alas....it needs to be said, there i(s no w)ay around it, I've been crashed, totally and utterly. Sheer genius, unrivaled creativity, peerless depth, originality and most importantly, FUN. If you read these Stephenson books for passing time during a break or at home, ensconced in your most luxurious sofa with your sights on some much needed evasion then this is it. I wrote before. "AT LAST, an author that can rival the genius of Frank Herbert..." and frankly, I believe we have a new master sci-fi story teller on our hands. I only wish us readers many more Stephenson titles in the future, I have declared myself an official hard core fan. Hey, I have to uphold my biased insight approach, enjoy!!!

Pranks prevail on the bayou when lollygagging Compere Lapin (aka Brer Rabbit) takes on Compere Bouki (which means "hyena") in these three lively folktales from the Pelican State. Lapin continually outwits Bouki, cleverly tricking him out of his cotton crop or playing dead in order to abscond with Bouki's seafood gumbo. Colorful vocabulary ("picayunish"; "hornswoggled") and peppery idioms ("greasier than a politician's palm") season each page, along with Doucet's (Why Lapin's Ears Are Long and Other Tales from the Louisiana Bayou) robust metaphors ("And there, as far as the eye could see, stretched sweet potato vines greener than ten-dollar bills and thicker than a passel of lawyers in cahoots"). Many of these literary devices require a sophisticated audience for full appreciation, as may also be true of Cook's (With a Whoop and a Holler) illustrations, with their abstract brushstrokes, recurring salmon and saffron hues and subtle details. But those who pay close attention will be rewarded by Lapin's canny expressions and droll mannerisms (e.g., chewing a mint leaf while clutching a glass of mint julep as he lolls in his hammock). Glossary and notes round out this highly polished presentation. Ages 5-up.

Kindergarten-Grade 5--Anyone who enjoyed Doucet's storytelling in Why Lapin's Ears Are Long (Orchard, 1997) and Cook's artwork in With a Whoop and a Holler (Atheneum, 1998) should enjoy this new romp that combines the talents of both individuals. The author takes readers back to the bayou for three more stories featuring Compere Lapin, this time as he plays all his tricks on Compere Bouki. Since these two are the Cajun alter egos of Brer Rabbit and Brer Wolf, readers shouldn't be surprised to find familiar plots from African-American folklore. The tale known as "Who Nibbled up the Butter?" in Joel Harris's The Favorite Uncle Remus (Houghton, 1973), the story called "Fox Goes Hunting but Rabbit Bags the Game" from Harris's Jump!: The Adventures of Brer Rabbit (Harcourt, 1986), and the episode popularized by Janet Stevens in Tops & Bottoms (Harcourt, 1995) all turn up here. There is even a Creole variation on the tar baby and the briar-patch tradition. Cook's paintings, perhaps his most impressionistic work yet, capture all of the action and humor of the text. Although some might quibble that none of the illustrations actually depict the bayou promised in the title, those from southern Louisiana know that it's not all swamps and cypress. The glossary and author's note will be helpful for folks unfamiliar with the historical background and Cajun terminology. Even collections that already have the other versions deserve this valuable lagniappe.

Gr. 4-6. Lapin, the trickster rabbit from Cajun country, returns in this follow-up to Why Lapin's Ears Are Long (1997), a collection of pourquoi tales. The three stories in this title follow Lapin as he hoodwinks rich, dim-witted Bouki, a hyena in African folklore, who has, according to Doucet's note, morphed into "a vague dog-wolf character" in the U.S. Children will enjoy making obvious comparisons between Lapin and other familiar rascals from folklore; Brer Rabbit will come to mind particularly in the final story, a retelling of the Tar Baby tale. Filled with sly, hilarious regionalisms and spiced with bayou phrases (a glossary is included), this is a wonderful choice for enlivening folktale units. Cook's thickly brushed, impressionistic paintings in the earthy colors of a rich Cajun sauce show the stories' bluster and exaggerated action and will work well for read-alouds. About the Author
Kim Flottum brings a background of twelve years of plant science, honey bee research, �and basic farming to his thirty years as the editor of�Bee Culture�magazine where his main occupation is finding the answers to the multitude of questions that beginning, intermediate, and even advanced and experienced beekeepers bring to the table. He teaches beginning and advanced beekeeping courses, travels extensively to educate and lecture, and contributes to a variety of other publications on the basics of honey bees and beekeeping biology, the business of bees and pollination, producing and using varietal honeys, and a host of other subjects. His books, magazine articles, interviews, and blogs are widely read for both their fundamental and advanced contribution to beekeeping knowledge. His magazine platform gives voice to his social commentary on topics ranging from genetically modified foods to pesticide abuse to both good and bad government regulations in the industry. He is beekeeping's leading advocate for fundamental honey bee safety including insuring excellent honey bee health, providing extraordinary forage, and minimizing the use of agricultural pesticides.

As a Newbee beek last Spring ('14), I received this as a gift & I just love it. It's very helpful for keeping my hive journal & is filled w/ lots of helpful info, tidbits, recipes, etc. I've met Kim Flottum & this journal is written the way he speaks. Information that is easy to understand.

Great Journal.

Not even the bee suppliers have this journal. Fun, witty, poems and check points for the different seasons to get things done.

I bought this book as a 2014 Christmas gift for my BeeKeeping Mentor. After looking through it before I gave it to him I realized that I had to get one for myself.
