Great for beginners TO SHAREPOINT, not beginning developers

I'm a SharePoint Infrastructure Engineer who is working on adding some development skills. I purchased this book because of the "Beginning" in the title, but it's not for the beginning I'm coming from. If you're no great shakes at coding, this book will be deficient for you because it covers what is new and/or unique about SharePoint, but not coding basics that would allow you to use those features if you're not already familiar with a language.
So if you're good with C#, JavaScript or Silverlight and you want to get into developing for SharePoint (and have history developing for other web technologies) this would probably be a great book for you. If you're like me, though, and don't have a deep background with any of those languages, you'd be better served buying a different book to learn the language, then coming back to this one to specialize in SharePoint technologies.
Of course, if I'd read the first page I would've gathered that, so I can't really blame the authors. The first sentence under the header "WHO THIS BOOK IS FOR" is (and this is a direct quote):
"Simply put, this book is aimed at the developer who is new to SharePoint."
That's what I get for judging a book by it's cover, I suppose. They could've made the title "Beginning SharePoint 2013 Development, but not development in general," but that's confusing and terrible. Anyway, this review is to help other people avoid my mistake. I'll let you know if I find a book that better fills the need of being an introduction not just to SharePoint, but to programming in general.

I've tried a few other books and have read through more of this one. Another good resource is "Professional SharePoint 2013 Development" but it is also not for the novice programmer, just the novice SharePointer. The Professional development book is significantly more comprehensive, though, and covers a lot of the same material in a different way. If you're getting in to SharePoint development and are already a programmer I might recommend that book, though Beginning development explains some things in a better manner and with better examples.
All that said, there isn't really a good book to take you from no development to SharePoint Developer Extraordinaire. If you're starting from scratch, I recommend learning JavaScript, HTML and CSS. You can use those three technologies to create some great apps using Napa (which is awesome). This book and the Professional book are great supplements to help you become better with SharePoint specifically once you're good with HTML, CSS and JavaScript.
I upgraded my score from three stars to four stars since the book is pretty good for the target audience, and my lack of programming background shouldn't influence me to drag their score down.

So far the best SharePoint 2013 book on the market!!

So far this is the best SharePoint 2013 Development book on the market.
You will get to learn how to develop SharePoint 2013 projects using Visual Studio 2012 and Napa, Microsoft's online IDE for developing Apps for the Cloud.
You get a thorough understanding of what it means to created an Auto-Hosted App, SharePoint Hosted App, or Provider Hosted App. For those who don't know the new "App Model" is a complete paradigm shift from developing for SharePoint 2007 or 2010. By the time you are done with this book you will have the knowledge to start writing apps for SharePoint 2013 in an on-premise environment or for the cloud (Office 365). You will also learn how to write apps that can be deployed to Windows Azure and integrated into SharePoint 2013. You will then get exposure to the completely revamped Client-Side Object Model and REST APIs.
I am about 3/4 done with the book and feel very confident in beginning my development with SharePoint 2013. Buy this book if you are looking to get up to speed quickly with SharePoint 2013. As the other reviewer stated don't be fooled with the "Beginning" in the title. Even if you are a SharePoint 2007 or 2010 veteran you will need to learn the new app model and this is just the place to start. Happy reading!! :)

Not ready for prime time!!

I agree with several of the other reviewers that this book provides good information and insight about SharePoint development. However, if you plan to build the exercises, or download the code, you will be disappointed! It is likely that the book was written before the final version of SharePoint 2013 was released. As such, the directions are no longer valid and the code simply doesn't work. In some cases the directions are also incorrect and leave out important steps, code and variables needed for the examples to work. Unfortunately, the errata hasn't been updated to reflect the necessary changes and a recent download of the code was 'almost' worthless. I waited two months, as it bothers me to write a negative review, but I am doing so in case other customers plan to rely upon this book to quickly meet a project objective. That said, if you have plenty of time, and if you can get the authors to respond to questions on the Blog, this book may provide you with limited value. However, if you expect the code to work and the exercise steps to be complete, then do not buy this book!
