Frankie Condon is an associate professor of English and the faculty coordinator
of the writing center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She lives in Lincoln

Buy this book!

This book offers a rich and compassionate look at white identity in efforts to resist racism. Each chapter blends the author's personal experience, voices of activists, and history. Condon writes with humor and sincerity. As she reflects on powerful stories, she offers new ways for white readers to look at how to approach our role in changing racism, how to embrace the challenges of resisting racism despite a lifetime of benefitting from it. Both activists and educators might appreciate this book. And it's a beautiful, easy read -- I could not put it down. I can see why this book won an Educators Award from DKG for helping us "(think and act) in today's complex society."

I am not an academic, but Condon is able to do the tricky task of weaving theory and her life story together to braid a powerful book I read cover to cover over the holidays, something I haven't done with a book by an academic in . . . actually, never. It has its redundancy, which is helpful for me in terms of grasping and remembering critical ideas, and I wanted more of Condon's own narrative to be more consistently present, but the author builds her exposition in meaningful ways, nonetheless. I kept thinking of people I wanted to have conversations with about the book--with the author, my college-age daughters and co-workers.
Many people, namely the POTUS, have talked about having meaningful conversations about race. I think Condon helps "whitely" people begin and understand what's at stake and what's involved in sticking with it.

Not for me

I think this might work best for parents of easy to average children who feel they are in over their head due to their own parents not providing a role model that they care to emulate. It was not for me.

The program borrows from positive discipline and mindfulness acceptance therapy in about equal measure. (i.e. Give two positive choices, accepting the moment as it is and being in control of your reactions.) The book as a whole has a kind of Beatles /Buddhist flavor (ala `All You Need is Love`). There is a strong focus on relationship building, similar to both Greene or Gardener. All of the ideas were familiar, but recombined in an interesting way. The book offered a fresh viewpoint and some new tips for implementing the strategies.

I would describe this as a philosophical approach. Some research is sited. More research is alluded to, but not referenced (i.e. `unnamed research shows that...`). Also, the author is not clear regarding what research clearly shows, vs. conclusions she drew from the research herself, vs. what is more of a `personally held belief, not actually refuted by research I am personally familiar with`. It's similar to Dobson`s _The Strong-Willed Child_ and Greene`s. _The Explosive Child_ in this respect. The author has extensive experience in early childhood education. My understanding is that she has no children of her own.

I liked: Bailey's description of the Flip Flop was just great. I've read about the idea before; this description was the clearest I've seen. Also, her recommendations for being assertive and for staying calm were helpful. These weren't novel ideas, but more strategies to use on the tricky days are more than welcome.

I didn't love: (1) The writing seemed unnecessarily circular and repetitive to me. At one point, I thought I had lost my place (I hadn't.) (2) Bailey seemed to have some strongly held values, and didn't hold back. I wonder if she realized she is ok using praise to encourage characteristics she values (helpfulness, persistence), but is extremely hard on parents who reinforce success, stoicism, or compliance. I don't even disagree very much with her value system, I just found it odd that she didn't seem to realize it was the same general principle. She also had a fairly preachy, there is no such thing as `good enough parenting`, do it my way, or your kids will be in therapy forever tone at times. Which she alternated with, `just love yourself and accept the moment as it is`. I found the combination both irritating and jarring. (3) Finally, she stated her opinion just like it was a fact. I can read a book like that, because I'd take a tip from the devil himself, if it worked and didn't involve hurting anyone else. But I find it almost unbearably annoying.

You, on the other hand, may love this book and find it works beautifully with your child. I'd just recommend trying it at the library before you buy.

I will honestly admit that I started skimming about half way through, the second time Bailey said that chronic noncompliance had only 3 causal factors: Stress, chronic stress from a bad home life, and parents inadvertently reinforcing bad behavior. Which is simply not accurate, in addition to being demoralizing. Most of the experts in the field also talk about temperament (both child and parent), goodness of fit, and underlying disabilities (as well as subclinical issues). I wasn't enjoying the read anyway, and that was it for me. I don't need more of that in my life, I get plenty for free at the grocery store. I did keep a close eye out and double checked the back for citations. Didn't find any additional.

Wish I had this when my 5yr old was 3!

I found myself mad at my 5 year old all the time, and very short tempered around him. It felt like I was always saying 'no' or 'stop that'. It got to the point where I didn't even want to take him anywhere because I didn't want to have to correct him the whole time we were there. In short, I was not having fun being a mom. This book was recommended to me and I started reading it thinking, 'oh my gosh, I do that, is that wrong? Is that why he acts this way? Is that why I act that way?' The book showed me where I had made some poor parenting choices and how re-phrasing things or giving my son real choices he was in charge of could make a big difference. I started changing the way I disciplined him immediately and it has made an immense difference! I've even got my husband to read it because he can see the change in both my son and me. I'm not angry all the time, my son isn't in time-out all the time. We're not fighting about getting dressed and getting in the car, and all the other things that are daily life chores that were once difficult. My style of parenting wasn't working and something had to change. This book made that change happen and has made our house and happier place. Don't get me wrong, there are still hiccups- but it doesn't turn ugly anymore. I only wish that I had known about this book when my son was 3.5 instead of 5, a lot of things could have been avoided!

Amazing Book!

This book has really changed the dynamics of our entire family and how we relate to one another. One youngest is fortunate enough to attend a cutting-edge lab NAEYC accredited lab school where they practice Conscious Discipline. As I watched her those first few months, I realized very quickly that she seemed to be better equipped with social/emotional skills than our oldest... and to some extent her parents! When you watch a toddler go from full-on toddler meltdown to watching her calm herself using deep breathing techniques that many adults can't even do, you start to wonder what this stuff is all about. We all began reading this book - parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles - and it has really helped all of us. People will often stop us and say, "WOW! That was amazing! How did you do that?" or "Can you teach me?" I love that Becky Bailey gives practical, real-life examples throughout the entirety of the book. Every sentence is full of things that you can immediately put to use. There are lots of highlighted sentences in our copies of this book. I've read TONS of parenting books, but none of them come close to this one. In my mind, there is nothing better out there anywhere!

An excelent book

The book is quite nicely written and full of insights into the architecture of Open Source Applications. The principles described in the book can be reapplied in your own work both as part of a reengineering and refactoring effort as well as the basis of a new product.
I really enjoyed the chapters on GDB, GHC and Yocto.

This volume provides a great look inside a number of mature applications across a wide variety of domains. It contains lessons for anyone who is interested in software engineering in the large.

Each chapter is written by a different contributor, so the quality varies a bit from chapter to chapter. Still, it and its sister volumes are enormously valuable resources for the practicing programmer.

The kindle version is well formatted and the diagrams are all very legible.

I've read the first volume of this series, but this one seems to be even better! It is such a pleasure to listen to the voices of real builders of the modern software instead of being preached by the so-called experts from the Agile/Lean/(put your favorite hype here) world. Interesting and entertaining!

About the Author

Dr. Robert T. Grauer, Creator of the Exploring Series

Bob Grauer is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Information Systems at the University of Miami, where he is a multiple winner of the Outstanding Teaching Award in the School of Business, most recently in 2009. He has written numerous COBOL texts and is the vision behind the Exploring Office series, with more than three million books in print. His work has been translated into three foreign languages and is used in all aspects of higher education at both national and international levels. Bob Grauer has consulted for several major corporations including IBM and American Express. He received his Ph.D. in operations research in 1972 from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn.

Dr. Keith Mulbery, Consulting Series Editor and Excel Author

Dr. Keith Mulbery is the Department Chair and an Associate Professor in the Information Systems and

Technology Department at Utah Valley University (UVU), where he teaches computer applications, C#

programming, systems analysis and design, and MIS classes. Keith also served as Interim Associate Dean,

School of Computing, in the College of Technology and Computing at UVU.

Keith received the Utah Valley State College Board of Trustees Award of Excellence in 2001, School of

Seems Unfinished / Rushed in Editing

This book teaches you a lot about Excel but it seems like either the author didn't finish writing the book or maybe it's just poorly written. Some things still seem to be in a pre-finished format with unclear directions on some assignments. 2nd edition really needs to fix that.

I had to purchase this book for a college class. It has been very easy to use and helpful for learning spreadsheets in Excel. I like the layout, writing and the hands on experience it provides. Great way to improve your office skills at home!

This actually worked for me.

I had the great privilege and pleasure of experiencing a rather long regressive hypnosis session with Mira Kelley in 2010 and it was, without exaggeration, an amazing and mind-blowing experience, for two important reasons: (1) the information that was revealed to me; and (2) the skill with which Mira conducted the session. In addition to possessing remarkable ability as a hypnotist, Mira is a person of extraordinary kindness and sensitivity. This is important not only in helping to put the hypnosis subject at ease, but also because it defines the approach and attitude with which the entire session is conducted. The skillful expertise and inspired intuitiveness with which Mira guided me through that session were nothing short of masterful.

As to this CD: in spite of the wonderful experience I had with Mira during our in-person session together I nevertheless had my doubts as to whether it would be possible to truly become hypnotized and regressed merely from listening to a pre-recorded audio CD. Well, the fact is that - much to my surprise - it actually worked for me. Mira's pleasant voice and her very effective hypnosis-inducing technique combined perfectly to ease me into a peaceful and relaxed hypnotic state. On my very first attempt I had a clear vision & sense of myself with an appearance much different from that of my current self, and in a setting and circumstance that I've never experienced in my current life. It was brief, but it was very powerful and it felt totally real. I'm honestly still a bit amazed that it actually worked, but in truth I have been hypnotized before and I also meditate on a fairly regular basis so I guess I'm somewhat receptive to being hypnotized. If you've never tried hypnosis or meditation before then the included meditation CD will be a big plus - I tried it as well, and it was extremely effective. So, bottom line: Both CD's are excellent, I had a successful regression with my first use of the hypnosis CD, and I am very much looking forward to doing it again!

Truly unbelievable...

I have never tried regression before or hypnosis. I heard of this CD and at first I was hesitant to try it as I was not sure if it was safe to try this on my own without being guided by a person. I gave it a shot. The first part of the CD relaxes you beyond imagination. The state of relaxation that you go into can be described as that time of night when you are not awake but not completely asleep either. I suggest you do this on a recliner or comfortable chair rather than laying in bed to avoid falling completely asleep. In my case I was curious as to why I have a fear of being alone. Well, I don't want to sound crazy but I went there, to another time and place; a place where I could see the person that I was, and a complete scene of a movie unfolding before my very eyes. I will not go into detail as to what I saw but needless to say I was dumbfounded since i tend to be a bit skeptical about these things. I definitely got my answer. The scene that I saw unfold was not something that in my entire life I have ever seen before. I truly believe beyond a doubt that I was regressed. After "awakening" I remember every detail of the scene I saw. I will contact Ms. Kelly to schedule a personal appointment with her to do a full regression. I do not regret purchasing this CD at all!!!!!

Nice voice but technique is lacking

It appears from reading other reviews, this meditative CD works for quite a few people. Not so for me.

A few years ago I was regressed by two separate hypnotists. Each used a similar technique. I learned later they both had been trained by Michael Newton.

For me, when Mira uses the words, "deeper, deeper and deeper," that doesn't put me further into the hypnotic state. But when the facilitator uses, "when I count backwards from 10 you will find yourself in a deeper state. 10, 9, 8,.. etc, now!" works alot better for me. I also dont respond well to, "Allow yourself to feel this," or, "Allow yourself to smell the flowers," that kind of passive language does not pack the punch of a facilitator who instead says, "The fragrance of the flowers reaches your nose," and is assuming I am already there experiencing it. Mira's word choice is not convincing enough to me to create the suggestivity to get me into a regression.

Having said that, I do indeed enjoy Mira's incredibly relaxing and soft voice that goes at such an easy pace, there is no way to completely discount the CD. I have used this CD many times and never been able to achieve a regression. But I enjoy falling asleep to it. :)
