About the Author
David Cox is a sixty-something father of two and husband to Sally for forty-plus years. He has done everything from running a medical clinic, racing motorcycles professionally to a stint as a banker. Prior to moving to a remote island he was a mediator, arbitrator and business consultant for twenty years. None of this gave him any skills whatsoever for living off the grid.

Off the Grid: Could you handle it ?!

How do you start a story? Not at the beginning -- if you want to grab the reader you need a hook, and David Cox has a "hook" indeed as he opens with a harrowing incident, one that took place in the couple's early "pioneer" years; the results could have precluded this book being published. Those who have followed David's blog over the past few years will know some of these stories, but his wife, Sally, has done a masterful job of selecting and editing to make a seamless narrative.
Disclaimer: I know the area well, and while it is not the deep jungle or the frozen north, there are times when the weather can be hostile, and one cannot just head for the corner coffee shop when in need of company. David and his wife, Sally, do something many dream of, but few act on: they pulled the plug on city living, seemingly on a few days notice, although there was some planning to be sure. David is the author, but he makes it clear that this was, and is, a team effort. Sally could have written another version from her point of view, however with his self-deprecating "looking in" viewpoint, and ironic sense of humour, once you begin reading you won't put it down.
Dave and Sally struggle with the logistics of building and living in "Our Life Off the Grid", but they also know the importance of taking time to enjoy the varied wildlife, including frequent whale and dolphin sightings, from their deck. And. . . best of all, they discover the meaning of real friendship among their fellow islanders. When you finish the book, you will want to check out David's blog which he updates several time each week.

Laugh out loud with this great read

I've been laughing out loud ever since I started reading this book. Its so funny in a down to earth sense. Its the true life story of a crazy once urban couple who does what most of us dream about but are too afraid to do. The scenes are poignant and delightful. You can live vicariously in the great outdoors by reading the scenes about all the wildlife. The wife Sally is clearly a saint and goes along good naturedly with just about everything crazy Dave proposes. Its a story of wild adventure, love between a couple, the great outdoors and of course living off the grid.
A great read and a must for anyone considering such an adventure.

Loved the sample...the rest, not so much

This started out great! I was VERY interested in how one would build in such a remote area and how things did or did not go well with a vocational ed class helping. That took me through the free sample. But I found the rest of the book to shift to daily events which became repetitious and tedious. To be fair, I'm certain much of life off the grid does become repetitious and tedious...I was just expected other challenges. Similar to what was described in the free sample.
