A little regency fun!

If you are looking for a bit of fun with plot twists and a heroine thrown into impossible situations, then The Dangers of Deceiving a Viscount is definitely one to buy!

Phoebe is a "Desperate Dubutante" who was left penniless and needs to make some money. So, why not go out to make some by creating some gowns for the undeserving sisters of a Viscount. Of course, all the right people would frown on our heroine engaging in a trade. But, she needs the money. What to do? Go out in disguise as Mademe Dupree and, of course, complicate things by falling in love with the Viscount while living under outrageously awful circumstances.

I recommend this book highly as a fun bit of escapism sure to entertain!

major disappointment

I am giving this book 2 stars because I absolutely love Julia London's books. All of her books previous to this one have been keepers. This one won't be. I didn't like it--at all. First of all, it was boring. I started to read it, couldn't believe I didn't like it, put it down, picked it back up, and had to force myself to finish it. Not a good thing in a romance novel. I read Lisa Kleypas's newest and The Education of Mrs. Brimley both in one sitting. Couldn't put them down.

What I felt was lacking in this book were magnetic lead characters. Phoebe was just sort of bland and Will wasn't too likable. I really liked the previous 2 books in the Desperate Debutantes series. But, the idea of a lady masquerading as a servant, okay a seamstress, same thing, just didn't work. And, it went on right up to the end of the book. That means that the whole time they are playing around, the hero thinks she is a servant. That, to me, is not honorable and not the way a hero should behave.

Will's family was just positively horrendous. His sisters were awful and I couldn't stand them. I certainly have no wish to read any more of their exploits in future books. They were screeching shrews. And, his brother Joshua certainly doesn't have hero material written all over him. I found it hard to believe that this family could fall apart so quickly in Will's absence.

Anyway, for me, this book failed on several levels. I didn't like the premise of the heroine pretending to be a servant for so long into the story. I didn't like the fact that the hero seemed to be taking advantage of a servant while planning who he would marry. I didn't like the hero's family at all and, worst of all, the book was boring.

So, 2 stars for Julia London, because I know she can do better.

GREAT BOOK!!

Great ending to The Desperate Debutantes trilog. Phoebe character was great and the Viscount of Summerland character wasn't too shabby either. Had a few tears in my eyes when Phoebe thought she had lost William. Enjoyed this book, as well as the other two, their on my book shelf to read again, another day. Thanks Julia for 3 great books.

Perfect Addition to Your Makerspace

This is a perfect addition to any Makerspace where students and adults of all levels can try fun and exciting projects. There are so many great projects, I do not know where to start. These are fun and practical for students on their own or in teacher/parent led activities in the classroom or at home. Wonderful job across the board and I can't wait to see what they will come up with next!

Such a great book for the family

With winter just around the corner and kids staying inside more due to the weather, this is an excellent way to keep them entertained while sneaking in some valuable skills in a world that grows more automated by the day. This is not the first MAKE book we have purchased and it will definitely not be the last. The way this particular book is set up is more like an instruction guide than prior books which are more free flowing when it comes to the steps to follow to complete one of the projects. Personally I felt this took a little bit away from the whole 'Maker spirit', but I did appreciate the clear step-by-step for the projects when flipping through the book with my 12 y.o. nephew. There is no shortage of projects that caught his eye, and he already talking up grand plans to see if it might be possible to combine some leads with others in order to come up with something much bigger and much cooler than the original listed idea. Though he's not yet been to a Maker Faire, my hubby/his uncle has been to several so both are raring to get started with their first project...once they can narrow their choices down from the dozen they have marked as "DO THIS ONE FIRST!!!" Though his school doesn't have a science fair, this book is full of ideas for your child to enter into their science fair. No more tomato soup exploding volcanoes - now they can make

For some of the projects it's likely that you may not have some of the tools or safety gear on-hand. Safety goggles, fire extinguisher (just to be safe!), soldering iron, non-static mat when dealing with chips and circuits - most of the items can be purchased for fairy cheap at a nearby Harbor Freight (they've always got a 20% off coupon in Sunday papers, online, and in-store) or craft store. Each project offers a chance to learn some new skill. Some skills, like soldering, you probably want your child to practice until you and they are comfortable with it, and there's great videos on YouTube, Make.com, Instructibles.com, Wikihow, or eHow.com that will give great instructions.

I love that this Make book is aimed more for kids than previous editions. Those are better for adults, experienced older kids, or kids helping out a knowledgeable parent.

If you ever have the chance to attend a Maker Faire in your area, do it! There's something for everyone to look at and say "Oh, WOW. That is so cool!" and activities for everyone to take part in. It's a fun way to become more than just an end user of today's tech, and who knows, maybe it will inspire your child to create a product that changes the world.

This is a great collection of projects with the junior maker in mind. These are budget-friendly projects that anyone can do - just takes a little bt of time, thought, and effort.

The maker movement is incredibly popular right now, and nowhere is it MORE popular than in schools. STEM and STEAM projects have infiltrated every corner of education (there are even music classes that are incorporating STEAM principles!). This book is a great resource for teachers, for club facilitators, and parents - because what's more fun than helping your kids create something cool at home - and seeing them learn in the process. This should be in every library and media center in the country - that's where this copy would be going, but the librarian already got a copy!

Rahner review

This book by Karl Rahner, especially the center section on Christ, is the best I have read on Christian theology.

Difficult exposition of Catholic faith

Karl Rahner is considered one of the leading Catholic theologians of the 20th century.

Rahner is interesting for several reasons, particularly for his strongly apophatic approach to God. This is reflected in this book, where God is considered the 'ultimate mystery' who is above 'all names', obviously echoing Pseudo-Dionysius.

Rahner's style is not the best or the most accessible, and Von Balthasar and Bernard Lonergan are much easier to read. Even Jacques Maritain is somewhat easier to read.

Rahner is not incomprehensible, but the reader will find this work very difficult to read unless they have some background to Rahner's thought, especially his extensive use of terms from existentialist and continental philosophy.

It remains one of his key works though, and needs to be read by any student of Rahner to understand his ideas.

Set the controls for the Heart of the Son

'Foundations of Christian Faith' is a deceptive title for a book which is in fact an overview of the whole field of Rahner's catholic progressive theology and it is no easy read; I gave an Italian version to a doctor friend who gave up reading it after the first 50 pages because 'it was too difficult'! It is however compulsory reading for anyone interested in the perennial conflict within catholicism between a theology inspired by St.Thomas(based on Aristotle) and St.Augustine(based on Plato). The representative of this latter theology is the Swiss theologian Von Balthasar who wrote his magisterial 'The Glory of the Lord' in response to what he saw as Rahner's 'dilution of the concept of Revelation' amongst other things. The current Pope Benedict XVI, a major theologian himself, is a firm supporter of Von Balthasar's theology which makes Rahner somewhat unpopular in Vatican theological circles today. Rahner, in contrast to the entire catholic approach to theology of the past 2000 years does not start his understanding of Christianity by elaborating upon the tenets of revealed faith, but starts from 'below' ie. from mankind as a species which is open to the supernatural in its very essence and then goes on to show how 'faith' fills this need or 'spiritual vacuum'; the point of conflict here is whether faith is inherent in human nature or is an act of grace (a created spiritual reality which is granted to Man but is not part of his natural constitution). Rahner, amongst other things, even opens out to Eastern religious ideas by stating that 'purgatory' might even be worked out over a series of successive reincarnations - something which clearly has the 'traditionalists' tearing their hair out!! A further difficulty, for the traditionalists, is that he tries to make evolution an integral part of an aspect of his understanding of faith - here I think he's on shakier ground. Placing a/any scientific theory as an integral part of theology exposes it to the risk of collapse should the theory prove (over time) to be false or is replaced by another theory (look at what happened with Galileo!!) - anyone interested can read Kuhn's 'The Structure of Scientific Revolutions'. Rahner's major works are currently out of print - so the 'Foundation' is indispensable reading if anyone wants to come to grips with one of the two 'giants' of modern theology (the other being Von Balthasar).I found this English translation to be excellent and its words have a very strong emotional as well as intellectual impact, which is why I invested in a copy despite having an Italian version. One last thing, Rahner's Jesuit biblical training can clearly be felt. Behind every concept he develops there is always a NT scriptural root, this is not stated explicitly, so be sure you keep the NT firmly in mind when you read him.

About the Author
David Cox is a sixty-something father of two and husband to Sally for forty-plus years. He has done everything from running a medical clinic, racing motorcycles professionally to a stint as a banker. Prior to moving to a remote island he was a mediator, arbitrator and business consultant for twenty years. None of this gave him any skills whatsoever for living off the grid.

Off the Grid: Could you handle it ?!

How do you start a story? Not at the beginning -- if you want to grab the reader you need a hook, and David Cox has a "hook" indeed as he opens with a harrowing incident, one that took place in the couple's early "pioneer" years; the results could have precluded this book being published. Those who have followed David's blog over the past few years will know some of these stories, but his wife, Sally, has done a masterful job of selecting and editing to make a seamless narrative.

Disclaimer: I know the area well, and while it is not the deep jungle or the frozen north, there are times when the weather can be hostile, and one cannot just head for the corner coffee shop when in need of company. David and his wife, Sally, do something many dream of, but few act on: they pulled the plug on city living, seemingly on a few days notice, although there was some planning to be sure. David is the author, but he makes it clear that this was, and is, a team effort. Sally could have written another version from her point of view, however with his self-deprecating "looking in" viewpoint, and ironic sense of humour, once you begin reading you won't put it down.

Dave and Sally struggle with the logistics of building and living in "Our Life Off the Grid", but they also know the importance of taking time to enjoy the varied wildlife, including frequent whale and dolphin sightings, from their deck. And. . . best of all, they discover the meaning of real friendship among their fellow islanders. When you finish the book, you will want to check out David's blog which he updates several time each week.

Laugh out loud with this great read

I've been laughing out loud ever since I started reading this book. Its so funny in a down to earth sense. Its the true life story of a crazy once urban couple who does what most of us dream about but are too afraid to do. The scenes are poignant and delightful. You can live vicariously in the great outdoors by reading the scenes about all the wildlife. The wife Sally is clearly a saint and goes along good naturedly with just about everything crazy Dave proposes. Its a story of wild adventure, love between a couple, the great outdoors and of course living off the grid.
A great read and a must for anyone considering such an adventure.

Loved the sample...the rest, not so much

This started out great! I was VERY interested in how one would build in such a remote area and how things did or did not go well with a vocational ed class helping. That took me through the free sample. But I found the rest of the book to shift to daily events which became repetitious and tedious. To be fair, I'm certain much of life off the grid does become repetitious and tedious...I was just expected other challenges. Similar to what was described in the free sample.

Sarah Harper, Professor of Gerontology at Oxford University and Director of the Oxford Institute of Population Ageing

Sarah Harper (MA (Cantab.) Cambridge; DPhil (Oxon) Oxford) is Professor of Gerontology at Oxford University and Director of the Oxford Institute of Ageing, a multi-disciplinary research unit concerned with the implications of population ageing, and director of the Clore Programme on Population-Environment Change. Her research concerns globalization and global ageing, and the impact of population change, in particular the implications at the global, societal and individual level of the age-structural shift from predominantly young to predominantly older societies. She has authored, edited and contributed to several books, including Families in Ageing Societies (Editor, OUP, 2004), Ageing Societies: Myths, Challenges, and Opportunities (Hodder Arnold, 2005) and Is the Planet Full? (Contributer, OUP, 2014). She is also the editor of the Journal of Population Ageing (Springer).

About the Author
Mr. Patrick Carey received his M.S. in Biostatistics from the University of Wisconsin, where he worked as a researcher designing and analyzing clinical studies. He co-authored his first textbook on using Excel as a statistical tool. Today, Mr. Carey has authored or co-authored more than 20 leading academic and trade texts for the software industry.

Ms. Carol DesJardins spent 25 years in the private sector as a programmer, systems analyst and eventually Chief Information Officer. During that time, she honed her skills with Excel as an analysis tool. She transitioned her knowledge to the classroom and has taught several applications and programming courses. Ms. DesJardins co-authored her first textbook on Excel. In addition to writing, she continues to teach at St. Clair County Community College.

How many times a day do you say to yourself that you can’t do something. However, there are other times when we say these words and they limit us. The hold us back from living up to our true potential. Here are some examples:

I can’t learn how to dance, I have two left feet!
I won’t even bother to try losing weight, there’s no point
I mustn’t disobey that rule, even though I think it is a bad rule
I am not good enough for this job

What do all of these statements have in common? They are limiting beliefs, and my goal with this book is to share with you the things I learned – things that helped me get rid of my limiting beliefs for good.

I had a whole slew of limiting beliefs that were holding me back. I had a job that I hated, and I was in an unhappy relationship, too. The exercises I’m going to share with you are things that I did to help me snap out of it and make my life what I wanted it to be. If you’re willing to take the steps outlined in this book, you can do the same thing. You can have the life you want, and it’s only going to take a week for you to permanently change your way of thinking.

Each day, I’ll tell you about a different aspect of limiting beliefs, and I’ll give you an easy and practical exercise that will help you figure out the things that are holding you back

We’ll start by digging a bit deeper in terms of understanding the different kinds of limiting beliefs so that you can identify yours. Then we’ll identify your goals, and talk about how you can change your internal monologue to help keep those limiting beliefs at bay.

Later in the week, you’ll learn how to eliminate excuses, and raise the standards you have for yourself. We’ll also talk about how to turn your new beliefs into actions. By the end of the week, you will be able to see a dramatic change in both the way you think, and the way you feel.

I enjoyed the storyline it was, interesting and I loved Jessica a strong independent woman and Joel a patient strong man to put up with some o Jessica take the bull by the horns no holds barred. The only problem I have with this book it didn't read like a biracial book they were no descriptions of Jessica, the baby Jonathan or her mother and others characters to tell whether they were black or white. Other than that it was a good read.

Too busy yet still captured by love and parenthood

Two overachieving wealthy folk decide they do not have time to have a child through courtship, so they enter into an agreement to have a child together, share the parenting and other aspects of child rearing but did not leave consideration for the fact that they were falling in love with each other. When they finally allow their feelings to surface, a happy ending looms on the horizon for both of them and their respective families. A very good read.

Love this book.

This story was a great read from start to finish. Sometimes I had to read a line over again to be sure I read it right. Joel knew how to handle Jessica with the gloves on and sometimes with them off. There were a lot of funny parts. Everybody needs a friend like Brian who can bring in the big money clients, and plus Brian needs his own story to find himself.
