Little Girls, by Ronald Malfi

From Bram Stoker Award nominee Ronald Malfi comes a brilliantly chilling novel of childhood revisited, memories resurrected, and fears reborn…

When Laurie was a little girl, she was forbidden to enter the room at the top of the stairs. It was one of many rules imposed by her cold, distant father. Now, in a final act of desperation, her father has exorcised his demons. But when Laurie returns to claim the estate with her husband and ten-year-old daughter, it’s as if the past refuses to die. She feels it lurking in the broken moldings, sees it staring from an empty picture frame, hears it laughing in the moldy greenhouse deep in the woods…

At first, Laurie thinks she’s imagining things. But when she meets her daughter’s new playmate, Abigail, she can’t help but notice her uncanny resemblance to another little girl who used to live next door. Who died next door. With each passing day, Laurie’s uneasiness grows stronger, her thoughts more disturbing. Like her father, is she slowly losing her mind? Or is something truly unspeakable happening to those sweet little girls?

Creepy and atmospheric
By Aspen
Little Girls has all the elements for a top rate chiller. Old house with a history, noises in the night, ghosts from the past, creepy kids, unexplained death and a bright young couple, with a 10 year old daughter trying to hold it all together.

Laurie returns to Maryland to sort out the estate of her recently deceased father. The family home was not a happy one and memories of past events soon come flooding back. Her father fell from a window in circumstances that aren't fully explained. Her husband and daughter love the old homestead and soon start exploring. Soon enough, there are half caught glimpses of shadowy children, stones are thrown, shutters clatter and doors close unexpectedly. Former care providers seem dark, sinister and frightened. Laurie's clearly troubled, but why? There's a strong sense that all is not as it seems. What's real, what's imagined and whose narrative is to be trusted?

I found parts of the book totally gripping and truly unsettling. The children are truly sinister. The writing is often understated but powerful and hits the right spot. But I had two problems with the book overall. The slow build pace works well, but is cluttered with too much extraneous detail about, for example, the furniture or staircase spindles. It was intrusive and broke the flow. The picture of the dilapidated old house filled with valuable antiquities had already been painted and sometimes less is more. Also, I wasn't entirely convinced by the twists at the end. So I was left with unanswered questions and felt slightly dissatisfied.

Those issues aside, I did enjoy the story. There's a strong sense of malevolent atmosphere and some really strong characters. I'm certainly encouraged to read other books by Ronald Malfi.

My thanks to the publisher for providing ARC via Netgalley.

Creepy Gothic Ghost Story--Malfi Is Amazing
By Chris McCaffrey
I received an ARC copy of this novel from the publisher through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I would like to thank them for allowing me to read an advance copy of this very fine supernatural thriller.

Spectacular ghost story dripping, figuratively and literally, with atmosphere. Gothic in tone, yet modern in treatment of the characters, this is the work of an accomplished writer. Fans of Henry James will find themselves thinking of The Turn of the Screw as the tension slowly builds and the reader weighs the possible implications of each revelation. There are no cheap scares here. More like a creepiness that envelopes you as if the heat went out in your house and the cold slowly settles into your bones.

Great pacing keeps the story moving along and the tension mounting while saving the big payoff for later in the story. Believable and complex characters draw you in. A very well plotted story-line unfolds like the peel of an onion, taking you deeper and deeper into a growing menace that is either supernatural or psychological but, whatever it is, it is 100% horrifying. This is a masterful ghost story in the classic gothic style by an accomplished writer. One of my favorite books this year.

It would make a fantastic movie.

Malfi strikes again.
By Robert Holmes
A fantastic ghost story written by one of the best horror writers publishing today, Ronald Malfi.
Laurie comes to her father's house to sort through his things after his death. In the dead man's house, strange noises can be heard and the locked door at the end of the hall calls to Laurie. Meanwhile, Susan, Laurie and Ted's daughter, makes friends with the girl next door, a girl Laurie thinks she recognizes from long ago.
Spooky and atmospheric, Little Girls is a story of madness and uncertainty which will keep you turning pages until the final unnerving scene.
