Great Tips and Lessons. Perfect for beginners and beyond!

This book has it all. It is especially great for the beginner, as it breaks down everything from essential brushes to discovering your perfect brow shape, plus great easy to follow lessons on a variety of looks. I love makeup, and wouldn't consider myself a total beginner, but it's easy to settle into a "safe" every day look and get overwhelmed by trying to delve into the abundance of information and options out there. This book is amazing at providing a bunch of little tips and tricks, and bringing everything to an approachable level. For example, I've always been a bit flummoxed by contouring, even though I can see how awesome it looks on people when done well, I've always shied away from it. The author does a really excellent job with diagrams for contour based on face shape, and even showing all of the unblended contour on the models pictured, to see it on a real face as well. The whole book is jam packed and easy to understand-- it's totally got me excited about makeup like I'm discovering it all over again!

Worth of having!

I was not sure about getting this one since I already got other books, but I couldn't resist it. I am new to make up and I want to know basics and everything. I am kinda in between becoming a make up artist and mastering make up art for myself. So I really want to know about face shapes, face tone, etc. (not just being able to recognize me own features). I am curious to read about eyes shapes, skin care, skin types and skin tones, how to apply make up in a right way (build layer by layer), how to find right shades of eyeshadows or lipstick, etc. This book got everything! And even more.
I love it as my other books on make up recommended by pros. Actually, I like it even better than some other books. It is great to have on hands. It got everything. Finally, there is a book that got section on face shapes! I looked for it since it helps to make a right corrective make up. This section is well-written and contouring is well explained. Book also got page on brows' shapes in relation to a face shape (really great stuff, I always wanted another shape for my brows, but now I see that nope, I got right one.) And eyes shapes and how to correct your eyes (so helpful!). And nose shapes and how to correct your nose! I am so exited!
I enjoy reading this book. It provides all sort of information that you need in a comprehensive way, keep it simple and straight to the point. It got tips and tricks that I haven't seen before. I feel like it helps reader to keep 'beauty on budget' so to say, not getting too crazy with purchasing different brushes or all sorts of foundation.
Some parts of book could be covered more in depth, but there is a lot of information to cover already. It got great variation ob eye shapes, nose shapes, face shapes, while other books may tell you just about four types. It got good variation of looks in the end of the book, easy to follow. I think this book is really good and becomes great if you'll add Jemma Kidd's book (Make up secrets or Make up masterclass). These books compliment each other. They are made for beginners and each got something to add. I feel like Idiot's Guide is great starting point.

If you are experienced in make up or a pro then move on and purchase other books (like one by Aucoin, for example) since you probably won't find anything new or exciting in this one. But if you're looking for beginning and trying to work out you're look at first before transforming other people, here is the book!

Much needed book

I am not a woman, but I bought the book because I have known of Mr. Klinger's work around the theater scene in Indianapolis. I have seen his work in theater and I have been mightily impressed by it. With several years experience in theater myself (My make up kit is bigger than yours, no, really, it is.) I was curious to see how Mr. Klinger would blend both worlds to bring women around the country what they have been wanting for a while now.

You have seen it on the news, all these actresses who look amazing, their cheekbones all the way in the skies and their eyes perfectly done. Well, their secret is blending techniques from street and stage make up: Highlight the positive, use shadows to hide or correct what does not please them, add amazing color to highlight the eyes and an amazing lip. The result? a face beaten to the gods. In a smartly written book, Mr. Klinger, a make up master of both street and stage techniques walks you through techniques to accomplish just that. In true Idiot's guide form, the book comes with lots of photographs and little tips to help you visualize the steps.

Now, as with every idiot's guide, there is one element missing: you. Remember that just reading the book will not turn you into an expert. Mi mamma said it best: "Practice makes perfect" and of you are willing to put the time to practice, this book will guide you through. My nieces will be getting this for Christmas.

Daniel Brown is Professor of Anthropology and Coordinator of Research and Graduate Education at the University of Hawaii at Hilo.� He has taught classes in all areas of physical anthropology, as well as in cultural anthropology and archaeology.� Dr. Brown’s research interest focuses on variation in how humans cope with psychosocial and physical stress, and the implications of that variation for health disparities.� He has received Chancellor Citations both for teaching and research at his university, and was elected as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.� He is a former President of the Human Biology Association, an international organization whose mission “is to advance the understanding of human biological variation, to enhance the training of professional human biologists, and to foster a better comprehension of the scope of human biology among scientific professionals and the public.”

good for introductory class

This textbook was helpful for my intro to human variation class. It was straight forward and easy to understand. I recommend it for intro classes but not for anything more than that. It is very basic, which I believe to be the purpose, but for any classes or studies in which in-depth research or info is needed I do not recommend. Overall it was okay, helped me get an A in my class and understand complex concepts when it came to genes, alleles, and human variation.

About the Author

Silvio Pons is Professor of Contemporary History and East European History at the University of Rome Tor Vergata and Director of the Gramsci Foundation in Rome. He is a member of the Editorial board of the Journal of Cold War Studies. His main research interests lie in the global history of communism and in Cold War history. His main publications include The Cominform: Protocols of the Three Conferences (1994); The Soviet Union and Europe in the Cold War (1996); Russia in the Age of Wars (2000); Stalin and the Inevitable War (2002); Reinterpreting the End of the Cold War (2005); and A Dictionary of Twentieth Century Communism (2010).

About the Author
Drake Eastburn is a registered psychotherapist in the state of Colorado, and a Board Certified Hypnotherapist and Certified Instructor through the National Guild of Hypnotists (NGH). He is a member of the National Federation of Hypnotists, OPEIU LOCAL #104 and a member of the Colorado Association of Psychotherapists (CAP) of which he has served on the board. Drake is the Director of Eastburn Hypnotherapy Center, and Co-Instructor for Eastburn Institute of Hypnosis, which he founded with his wife, Lynsi. Drake is a regular presenter at the National Guild of Hypnotists annual convention and Summer Institute in Marlborough, MA, and at various other conventions and conclaves including the Mid-America Hypnotists Convention in the Chicago area. He is the creator of a highly specialized smoking cessation program which he has taught internationally, along with companion classes for a number of his books. Drake is one of the most prolific writers of contemporary hypnotism. A Primer On Suggestion

The Power of Suggestion by Drake Eastburn is an excellent book for both experts and newcomers to the language of hypnosis. Myself being the latter, I was initially worried that I wouldn't understand some of the concepts, but this wasn't the case. The language is clear and concise, and I never felt as if the author was pandering to me.

What I particularly enjoyed were the explanations of how suggestions affected the subconscious. I've always wondered exactly how hypnosis works, and now I feel like I have a solid understanding. After reading the explanations, and the included hypnosis scripts, I have a much better understanding of the power of suggestion. Recommended for anyone looking to learn more about how our minds work.

When I read the summary for "The Power of Suggestion" by Drake Eastburn it sounded like a book that I would be very interested in reading. Well after reading this book I can tell you that this is most interesting and complete book on the language of hypnosis that I have ever read. The author really does an exceptional job of explaining how the power of suggestion works and why it’s so powerful. As a fan of hypnosis I thought I knew the basics of suggestions but my eyes were opened when Drake Eastburn explained how suggestions come down to being Positive or Negative, Direct or Indirect and all the rest are variations of these four. The author is clearly a very accomplished hypnotist who has decided to write a skillfully crafted book that other hypnotists can use to further their knowledge regarding the language of suggestion. I was very impressed with how complete this book is and how Drake Eastburn touches on so many important areas of hypnosis such as metaphor, affirmations, afformations, leverage, scripts, pacing & leading and so much more. For those with an interest in hypnosis you need to purchase this book because you will not find a better book that covers how to use the power of suggestion or discusses the subject in such detail. This book is not only for students of hypnosis, hypnotists and hypnotherapists but anyone with an interest in the language of hypnosis & the power of suggestions. I highly recommend “The Power of Suggestion” and I’m looking forward to reading more books by Drake Eastburn in the future.

A Must-Read for New and Even Seasoned Hypnotherapists

When someone begins training as a hypnotherapist, he or she soon realizes that the subject material is wide-ranging. Some of the information is essential, yet other topics are only nice-to-know. Understanding and proficiently using proper and correctly-formed suggestions are vital to the professional hypnotherapist.

In "The Power of Suggestion" Drake Eastburn adds to the fine tools delivered in his first four books.

In plain language, he explains how the subconscious can be prompted to initiate change through the skillful use of indirect suggestion. Methods include metaphor, embedded commands, affirmations, afformations, confusion, and the very effective double-bind. He draws on the world of Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP) to explain why these patterns work. In this context, these techniques are known simply as Ericksonian Hypnosis. As a bonus, he even includes some his original hypnosis scripts.

If this book was available when I first became a professional hypnotherapist, I would have started my career with a more solid foundation. I highly recommend it to those wishing to enter this career path, and even those currently working as professional hypnotherapists.

for people who aren't half-baked new-agey sods

I have read a LOT of self-help books and tried a LOT of stuff. I was a half-baked person myself who believed all the trash that 90 per cent of 'self-help' books talk about. Then I got chewed by reality and was humiliatingly spat out again. Robert Greene is THE ONLY author I found to be genuine, inspirational but realistic, and when it's needed, he shows you the dark side of human nature without hiding it under the carpet like 90 per cent of self-help books do. Robert Greene doesn't suggest that you go around like a fool believing that the 'universe' is a 'good' place. Actually, this book, 'Mastery', is more 'forgiving' than his masterpieces, 'the 48 laws of power' or '33 strategies of war' .

This book is about MASTERY. It's about people who are willing to pay the full price in mastering a craft, an art, a difficult skill, over the LONG term. And when I say LONG, I mean a decade or more. I know what Greene is talking about, since I myself have been involved in my skill for amost a decade now, and EVERYTHING Greene mentions in the book, is astonishingly accurate. The 'inner calling' (still remember mine, it was so powerful I could not move), the apprenticeship, the way after a certain stage your mind seems to make connections that surprises even the individual who's experiencing them (I have felt this many times in the last 3 years, and I have seen the look on the face of people who were watching me).

This book is not for half-baked people who watch the dvd 'The Secret' and watch it's stupid content and people and go around like fools believing unproven trash, such as the 'law of attraction'.

I suggest you get both the full edition and the concise version of Mastery. But make no mistake, the concise versions are EXTREMELY well written books, you can get a lot out of them. This isn't the Kindle misspelled piece of trash that people sell on kindle for 2 bucks.
I have every version of every Greene's book, the guy is that good. Another thing I like about him, it's his honesty. This isn't the 'guru' schmuck who's telling me some made up crap to sell his book. To me all other 'gurus' like Robbins and all the other million ones, are like rancid cheese. They are fluffy and banal, going around talking unproven trash like 'the law of attraction' and stupid things like these. They say things that half-baked people want to hear, not realistic things about human nature and how the world really works. To me, if it doesn't deal with realism, it's junk.

Well done Mr. Greene. I am looking forward to your next book. Please continue keeping things REAL. And please don't forget an abundant dose of MACHIAVELLIANISM. :)

Great, consice book. Has everything you need from it's big brother "Mastery".

Excellent summary for those wanting to brush up on the finer points of the main book. Also, great for those more interested in the "meat and potatoes" than in the stories that go along with the idea. Happy to own both versions of this book.

Perfect refresher! But some ink problems.

I love the smaller size of this edition. I believe a new reader would get more out of reading the full-size edition, but for those who have already read that regular edition this is a great copy to keep on you to read as a refresher.

My complaint with all of these "concise editions" of Robert Greene's books (as I have two) is that the ink is not complete on some of the words throughout the book. For instance, the word "this" on one of the pages has the lower half of the letter "t" missing. This occurs on most pages throughout the book - and isn't resigned just to the letter "t." While I have yet to read a passage where the meaning was obscured as a result of incomplete ink, it is noticeable and distracting every time you come across such errors. I wouldn't have thought this to be a problem in modern day book presses.

The perfect conclusion to an incredible series

Dawn Study is the long-awaited conclusion to the Soulfinders series and the Ixia Chronicles. How I have loved every single minute spent with Valek, Yelena, and the gang. They have grabbed my heart, taken me on wild adventures, driven me slightly crazy with tension, and changed forever the way I look at books. Dawn Study is everything I was expecting and waiting for. Incredible doesn't do it justice. Prepare yourself, because this is going to be a long review - when I am this in love I get longwinded.

Yelena and Valek have long been working towards establishing peace between the countries of Ixia and Sitia. Now they must face their final battle. The magicians of Sitia are under the control of a rogue group and the Commander is threatening to invade. Yelena, Valek and their friends have until the hot season before they lose their chance of peace once and for all. They will need to sacrifice everything in the hopes of one day being able to raise their family in safety.

Dawn Study kind of felt like both a second-last and last book in the series rolled into one. There is so much contained within its pages. Along with Yelena's first-person-narrated chapters, readers are treated to chapters from Janco, Valek, Leif and also Heli's perspective, told in third person. This keeps the reader well informed about all the different angles of the story and made me pay attention as it sometimes takes a while to circle back around through all the characters. It also made it a little hard to pick the story back after putting it down (because, you know, my boss doesn't like it when I read all day, although 'it's Dawn Study' might have proven a worthy excuse). But these multiple perspectives are necessary to continue the story and I absolutely love the extra insight we get into all the characters.

When I'm talking with people about books, be they students, friends or complete strangers, I am likely to ask "have you read Poison Study? No? Well, you have to. Don't ask why, just read it. You can thank me later." It is a series unlike any other. And Dawn Study is the perfect conclusion. In a way I'm kind of glad this is the end of the series. Because Yelena, Valek and all the gang seriously deserve some peace. It's funny, but Valek is getting old. He's still the best spy and fighter around but his weariness seeps through his every breath and action - he is ready to settle down, raise his family, and grow old with Yelena. And I absolutely love that! It kind of hit me that all the characters are so much older now. All grown up you might say. Even Fisk is seventeen now. Their lives have been dominated by fighting for peace and in Dawn study they make their final stand. And we finally get some answers to some big questions, like what is causing Yelena's magic blockage and HOW ON EARTH IS IT GOING TO END??????

I have always loved Valek and Yelena as a couple (Valena? Yelek?) and Dawn Study just shows us why all over again. They are honest with each other use humour and teasing and love to cope with the stress they are under. They are not perfect, but you never, ever doubt they will work things out. I love that Valek and Yelena get to spend so much of this book together. Aside from a few dangerous situations and journeys, Valek and Yelena are together for the majority of the book, which is so nice after previous books where they are so often apart. It is something Valek himself comments on. It also means there are plenty of opportunities for alone couple time. These are always fade-to-black scenes but there is no doubt what is going on... just another reminded that despite the YA love for and adoption of this series, the Ixia series has always been a general fiction title and not YA. But of course its readership and fans spends generations.

I don't think it's too much of a spoiler to say readers will be happy with the ending. I laughed, cried happy and sad tears, and simply didn't want it to be over while enjoying every minute of the conclusion. I think Maria Snyder would have had to worry about sneaky assassins in the night if she didn't give us an ending to cherish. As Valek says, it is time for the next generation to step up and start leading. If we as readers get to be privilege to that next generation's adventures I will be very happy and eagerly come along for the ride. But if this is the last we see of Sitia, Ixia, and their wonderful inhabitants than I am content to have enjoyed the journey. All I can say is: Maria Snyder, thank you. Thank you for the wonderful characters, the adventure, the love, the excitement, the tears, the heart-stopping moments. Thank you.

A Perfect Ending

A perfect ending. For the last ten years I have loved spending time with the characters Snyder has introduced me to through the Study series, and her spin off series. It's been bittersweet knowing that this was the last book featuring some of my all time favorite literary characters. I loved their story ends. Everything wraps up just the way it should be. For the characters it's about closure, new chapters, hope, fresh starts, healing, and so much more.

The overall series storyline, mixed with this new one bring favorite characters, and new ones together for one last time. In true Snyder fashion, this book is chalk full of surprising twists, shocking discovers, fight scenes, wits, and of course the moments I absolutely love between Yelena and Valek. One of the things I've loved about this series, is Snyder's use of all her characters. Sure there are our main characters, but her entire cast of characters all have played, and continued to play crucial parts in this story. It's each of their stories that are both intwined, and individually that are wrapped up in this book.

All the answers you've been waiting for, the moments you didn't think were going to happen, and the scenes you've been dying to read are gifted to fans in this book. I could not have asked for a better conclusion. Well almost. There are still a couple characters I had hoped would have had a little more time in the story vs being mentioned. Other than that, this is the kind of ending I was hoping for. Yes, I'm being vague. I can't mention specifics without giving away spoilers. I will say, not everyone turns out the way I thought they were, happy endings aren't always wrapped up in pretty bows, but come in the form of characters realizing what's most important, and their journeys merging together are far better than bows, and forced endings.

Thank you Maria for sharing the long journey of your wonderful characters with us. For their stories, and those of their faithful & loyal friends. I've loved these characters, each of their journeys, and all of the books that take part in this world.

Wonderful conclusion!

There's just something about the anticipation of the final book in a beloved series. I was so excited to get Dawn Study and start reading it, but when it finally came out, I was super nervous to start it. I didn't want my adventures with these wonderful characters to end! The Study Series is my absolute favorite series and Valek and Yelena are my absolute favorite book characters ever, so I was afraid that my expectations were so high for this book that there was no way I'd be satisfied with the ending. I had no need to worry. I'm not going to say much and spoil something, so I'll end by saying, it was amazing and everything I'd hoped it would be and more! If you've ever been a fan of this series, go pick up a copy!

Jerald L. Rounds, PhD, PE, is Associated General Contractors Endowed Chair in Construction Management and Construction Engineering at the University of New Mexico. Concurrently, he has developed numerous training programs in project management and supervision for the construction industry. Most recently, he codeveloped the NECA Electrical Project Supervision training program with Robert Segner, with whom he has conducted "train the trainer" sessions for the past decade.

Robert O. Segner Jr. is a professor of construction science in the College of Architecture at Texas A&M University. He followed years of construction practice with four decades in construction higher education. He has served as president of the American Council for Construction Education. Segner codeveloped the NECA Electrical Project Supervision training program with Jerald Rounds and has conducted "train the trainer" sessions for the past decade. He has developed and taught numerous other continuing education programs.

Bayt Al-Aqqad

I admit that I only read a couple chapters of the text and skimmed the narrative for most of the rest. It gets pretty specific about the processes used for restoration and details about the historical structures. I don't have the attention span for all that detail, but the broad story itself is pretty amazing. The results of the rennovation looks wonderful. I don't want to devalue the authors' and the Danish Institute's efforts by classifying this book as being primarily a sourcebook of ornament....it more a story of cross cultural collaboration and architectural history. But the richness of the ornament and craftsmanship is very well illustrated in hundreds of excellent color photographs. I've found myself looking through it like a coffee table art book repeatedly. If you like architectural ornament, irrespective of whether it's Islamic or whatever in tradition, this book is a treasure.
