Grade 7 Up—Sophomore Lucius Wolfe lost both hands in an explosion of his own making, and now he is left to pick up the pieces—with steel hooks. The story is told in alternating chapters by Lucius (Crazy) and Aurora (Beautiful). Baratz-Logsted does a deft job of weaving the perspectives together to show events from both points of view. Lucius chooses a bus seat so as to be left alone and is immediately called "crip"; Aurora gets on the same bus, smiles at people, and hears a voice call "New girl! Come sit back here with us." It doesn't help that Lucius has an air of arrogance about him and has changed schools to find a new start. The author spends equal time on several plotlines: Lucius, the brilliant loner destructo-kid, his amusing sister and his dysfunctional family; Aurora and her newly widowed saintly father; Nick, the good-guy security guard with dreams of the NFL; a school play; a false accusation; and Cecelia and Jessup, the scheming spurned lovers. Resolving everything makes the final chapters feel rushed and too perfect. However, the pacing is energetic and the topics current. Readers who have outgrown MJ Auch's One-Handed Catch and aren't quite ready for Harriet McBryde Johnson's Accidents of Nature (both Holt, 2006) might enjoy Crazy Beautiful.—Maggie Knapp, Trinity Valley School, Fort Worth, TX

Did I read the same book as the other reviewers?

For me, a romance needs to work--and be realistic--when the two main characters INTERACT with each other. Lucius and Aurora hardly interact at all. She feels sorry for him; he idolizes her. They have dinner together once and it seems Aurora and her father do all the talking. And the whole Gallowglass thing had me rolling my eyes so vigorously, I thought I'd sprain them.

Aurora's character is very simplistic. She's sweet to everyone whether they are sweet back or not because her mother told her to be. Lucius is just plain confusing. Why (SPOILER!!!!) would he want to do harm? Because his dad never played football with him? Please give me a break.

This book is inoffensive, for the most part, but really lacking in any character development or realistic dialogue, scenes, plot development--you name it. The characters are only 15, yet (Lucius, in particular) they speak so very formally. I realize this is supposed to be a retelling of Beauty and the Beast, but if you retell a story in a modern setting, I think the characters should reflect that setting. The ending is incredibly abrupt and the whole story is less than 200 pages long. Many books I've read have hardly even gotten into the heart of the story by the 200th page.

If you still have to read this, check it out from your local library. Really the only thing I found mildly interesting was the book's cover under the dust jacket--a violent pink that was far more vibrant than anything within the pages. For a MUCH better retelling of the Beauty and the Beast story, pick up Alex Flinn's "Beastly". Now THAT is an awesome book.

Fantastic modern retelling of Beauty & the Beast

In Crazy Beautiful, Lauren Baratz-Logsted revisits Beauty and the Beast, adapting this tale of love and transformation to a present-day setting. First meet the Beast, Lucius, who lost his hands in an explosion of his own doing. As an act of self-punishment and to keep others at a distance, Lucius chooses to live with hooks rather than prosthetic hands. Now meet Aurora, absolutely radiant, not to mention talented, but unhappy after losing her mother. Both new kids at school, they go in different directions: Lucius becomes a brooding loner while Aurora's beauty and clothing instantly attract the popular crowd. Nevertheless, small waves and smiles exchanged between the two quickly add up as Lucius realizes that not even his hooks will scare Aurora away. Together, they learn how to forgive, accept, and love.

To start, the cover of Crazy Beautiful is to die for. The stark contrast of the black and white, the unique font, and the smoke give the cover an edgy look that will instantly attract young adults. This fairy tale retelling is fast-paced, with short, to-the-point chapters. Unlike the original tale, the weight of the story is told from Lucius's point of view. Still, the chapters alternate perspectives, providing the reader with insight from both sides of various situations. Crazy Beautiful is full of raw emotion, as both narrators reveal their fears and insecurities, just like those any teenager tries to hide. Lauren Baratz-Logsted adds a nice touch by complicating the story with the high school's production Grease and Jessup's role as a parallel to Gaston. Though I couldn't pull myself away from this book, I found that the climax resolved itself too quickly. As a result, the end conflict was rather anticlimactic and difficult to believe. Overall, Crazy Beautiful is a well-done modern retelling of Beauty and the Beast that will captivate its readers. 8 of 10.

Weak Story

Finally getting around to writing this post. Book has been done for weeks. Been meaning to write this review, but now after these past three weeks I still don't like the book. Sure Crazy Beautiful by Lauren Baratz-Logsted had a great concept that hasn't been written about. No, one ever has had a character like Lucius, who blew off his arm in an experiment. What was the experiment? Don't know wasn't told. It was just explosive and a part of him wanted it to be worse than it was. Why did he want that? Don't know. What was this great beauty that was so crazy? Apparently it was just Aurora and how she liked him. Sure that could be really sweet. To me though I feel like since this had to do with something so tragic such has having a guy blow up his arms, I feel like it should be more powerful. I don't want to give anything away, but I feel like the book in general and the ending could have been more powerful. I want author to go back and rewrite it and make it longer. Go into more about the characters relationships with their family members. What made them do what they did. You see a glimpse of this, but I believe not enough.

The ending sure it was cute, I'll give her that, but it was very weak. Not going to say what it was, I will say though it was about 3o words or less. Not really sure. It was short, to short. It rushed through the climax, I was hoping then at least the ending would give you more closer. It just went, yea it over! Pretty lame in my opinion. But, it was good enough for me to finish, so at least it had the cuteness factor.

Love rental program.

This book arrived in good condition and is much less expensive than us having to buy one for my stepdaughters class. Every little bit helps and I love that we can deliver it back free with Amazon Prime when she is done with it. So far I see no issues at all and she is happy with the book. As far as a book review in itself, well she has to have it for her class so we shall see if she has any comment when she finishes it.

Parents of preschoolers, help is here!

I'm always on the lookout for fun, Bible-themed story books and activities that my children can both be entertained by and learn from at the same time. Zonderkidz has filled that need with a great book that your children are sure to love, because mine sure did!

The Super-Duper Mighty Jumbo Coloring book is an amazing book that is aptly named, containing almost 400 pictures for children to color! My children truly love this coloring book, not only because there are so many options to choose from, but because the book is divided into all of the main stories of the Bible. The book does not contain words from the Bible, but tells Bible stories through the pictures, allowing children to learn the stories while letting them add colors and their own creativity to the stories. My children's favorite was coloring the story of Jonah as he fled from God and was swallowed by a giant fish. My son just giggles over the picture of the fish throwing up Jonah onto shore! The coloring book will not only entertain your children with hours of coloring, but also help you impart Bible stories at the same time.

This coloring book had awesome coloring pages and it also covered most all of the bible stories and the regular stories as well, this coloring book is great and it was a jumbo book for real. I would recommend this product.

Believable and comprehensive account

I recently read this book, having read many similar books over the last 35 years. It comes across as a very comprehensive and believable account, including his description of Hell, which is reminiscent of other books I have read, where people describe a dark place where there are entities trying to hurt and do abominable things to one another or else deeply mired in despair and suffering.

For example, George Ritchie describes in his book Return from Tomorrow where he sees a plain "apparently still somewhere in the surface of the earth ... jammed with hordes of ghostly incarnate beings... who were locked in what looked like fights to the death, writhing, punching, gouging." He saw this as Hell, yet came to realise that there was something keeping these beings there, "Perhaps ...each creature here had sought out the company of others as pride-and-hate-filled as himself, until together they formed this society of the damned". George Ritchie then came to realise that the "entire unhappy plain was hovered over by beings seemingly made of light"....I clearly saw that not one of these bickering beings on the plain had been abandoned. They were being attended, watched over, ministered to. And the equally observable fact was that none of them knew it".

A similar account is given by Angie Fenimore in her book "Beyond the Darkness" where she describes entering a "plane of darkness" following a suicide attempt where she encountered myriads of people filled with despair. It is while in this plane, that similar to Howard Storm, she became aware of the presence of light and of God once her thoughts turned to Jesus and God. She writes "Why was it that I could see God while the vacant husk of a man next to me could not? Why was I absorbing light and being taught, while he was hunkering down in misery and darkness? I was told that the reason was willingness."

Both the above accounts seem to confirm Howard Storm's experience and I believe that all three books have something to offer folk from a range of religious and spiritual backgrounds, whether coming from a Christian perspective or from a "your thoughts/ focus determines your reality" point of view.

A Near-Death Experience in Paris

Howard Storm's "My Descent into Death" is a compelling read. It will only take you a few hours to read and it has many insights that resonate with biblical teachings. The story begins with Howard Storm in Paris needing immediate surgery to save his life. However it seems that the surgeons were not available to help him and he was left to suffer in great pain until he finally died and experienced the horrors of what seemed like hell.

This hell however did not have fire it was just total darkness where voices told him to follow them as they tried to destroy him. Howard realizes he is in a very bad situation and almost instantly calls on Jesus to save him. This is amazing because he is an atheist.

Miraculously he is taken away from hell into a more heavenly place. While he doesn't describe heaven in detail or hell for that matter what makes this book enjoyable to read is all the questions he asks Jesus and the angels and how they respond. I noticed that most of the answers were similar to those I'd read before in other books. This book states that the only way to heaven is by a belief in Jesus Christ. However this book also states that it doesn't matter which religion you believe in as long as it brings you closer to God. It is obvious that you can believe in Jesus Christ no matter what your religious upbringing. So that was the only thing that made me question this book.

I felt that this book was very intelligently written and it seems that from the time Howard Storm had the near-death experience to the time he wrote the book he had become very familiar with the Bible's teachings. In this way he was able to communicate what he learned in a very fluid fashion. This book is very easy to read and will interest anyone who has questions about the beyond.

Frightening In Its Implications

I found this book to be very interesting. I recommend it to people who are interested in those deeper philosophical questions.

The first few chapters talk about former atheist Howard Storm's unexpected death and the actual experience in that hellish realm. It's very interesting because he still had his senses like sight, hearing, smell, etc.. In fact his senses were much more acute in the spirit world. He was I think experiencing all of this in his spiritual body while his physical body was lying near death in the hospital bed.

Howard felt that the creatures he encountered in that other world had been human beings at one time but they had now evolved into something else. He felt that he had a choice to become one of them and join their gang on a one way journey.

People like Jeffrey Dahmer would appear to be reflections of those creatures in this world. In fact I suspect the true explanations for the behaviour of people like Dahmer will not be found in psychology. It will be found in the spirit world.

The rest of the book tells how God rescued Howard from hell, what he found out during a visit to 'heaven', and how all of this affected his life and thoughts when he got back to the land of the living. When he got back Howard had a much different perspective about life and he was glad to be back. That's what's so frightening about all of this. How close did he come to never making it back ?

Howard's painting on the cover shows the scene where God came and rescued him. There's some other paintings in the book including the sexual assault down in hell.

Or let me clarify Howard felt he only reached the gates of hell as opposed to going into the depths of hell from which point there is probably no chance of return. Or even if someone did return from the depths of hell they would probbaly be insane for the rest of their life.

In fact Howard says he has spent many years trying to forget some of the details of exactly what happened to him down there.

While in heaven Howard was able to ask Christ and the angels many philosophical questions such as why did the two world wars have to happen, 'what about atheism', and many other interesting things.

Since his return Howard has had some strange experiences such as angels appearing to him in the hospital, etc.. Many people probably have these experiences but they don't realize it at first.

Howard suggests that after an eternity in hell the soul can ultimately be 'annihilated' which I guess means the individual would no longer exist. This is consistent with the bible where it says "Fear Him who can destroy the soul in hell.". However Howard doesn't say how long this annihilation process can take.

Atheists don't believe in life after death. Perhaps for them this can become a self fulfulling prophecy if Howard's annihilation idea is true.

Howard Storm was no Jeffrey Dahmer. He was no Hitler. His great sin was only indifference to God and a belief in materialism, success, and self sufficiency. Perhaps this is all that's required for someone to lose their soul. That's the message of this book.

I never thought I'd be a prayer warrior, but it works!

Soooo good. I'm only a quarter of the way in and I feel worlds better. If you want fast chanfe... than combine prayer with fasting. I fasted a mere 36 hours and prayed. A vice that was gripping my heart and squeezing the life out of it for 8 years is gone. I feel like another person.Chains have truly been broken. Praise God almighty. Thank you to John Eckhardt. I don't have to words to properly describe what was released from me. Its on another level.

This is not better than the first book PRAYERS THAT ROUT DEMONS. He writes this differently, in the fact that it doesn't have as many scriptures like the first one did.

Still the Best Primer on "Near Death Experiences"

First published in the late 1970s, I believe this book is still the best introduction to the phenomenon known as the "Near Death Experience" (NDE). Whether you're a believer, skeptic, agnostic, atheist, Christian, Buddhist, Jew, Wicca--makes no difference, since the experience has been documented to happen to anyone regardless of their cultural influences or upbringing. If you have heard the phrase "near death experience" but have only a vague notion of what this entails, I urge you to pick up this book and read it--if you keep an open mind, it could change your life :)

Simply put, the NDE may give us a preview of what happens to humans when we die. I first read this book around 1985 and found it both fascinating and enlightening. It is very straightforward and even-handed in it's reporting--without religious overtones from the author, although he does draw correlations between NDE's and their possible appearance in texts such as the Tibetan Book of the Dead, the Bible & Greek philosophy. At the time of publication, Dr. Moody had only investigated about 150 cases total--since then, as the technology to resuscitate patients has improved, thousands more have experienced the NDE. The book also created an open dialogue about NDE's and many more who had kept the experience secret (for fear of being ridiculed) have come forward with their story.

The Light Beyond by Raymond Moody -- in my opinion, the best of his follow-up books on the subject.
On Life After Death by Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, M.D. -- One of the pioneers of NDE research & best known for defining "The 5 Stages of Grief & Dying." She & Moody were both studying NDE's at the same time without being aware of each other's research.
The Tunnel and The Light by Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, M.D. - Another collection of her writings & lectures on the subject of NDE's.

Although there are many more books on the subject (some by researchers, others by those who experienced an NDE firsthand) I always recommend these first as they are well-researched and, in my opinion, present the subject with the least amount of bias.

A must read if you've recently lost someone!

This book helped me heal after my mothers death December 1st. I was a wreck with grief for 2 1/2 months. I had that 1% doubt in my mind that maybe, just maybe, there wasn't a Heaven after all. I started drinking (every day)! I was a mess!
I read this in two days, and was "healed"! I felt so much better after reading it, that I gave it to someone else to read who was also grieving her fathers death.

Great book with historic value

Great book with historic value. The interviewees have to search for words because the terms NDE, white light, life review, etc. were not in the lexicon of contemporary culture at that time. I can't believe I took so long to read it, having had an NDE myself in 1982. If I'd seen this book sooner and brought myself to read it (despite my fear of being labelled a kook), I might have sought out IANDS sooner...

About the Author

James A. Momoh is a professor at Howard University and the director of the Centre for Energy Systems and Control (CESaC) at Howard University. He is well known for his achievements in engineering education and his extensive research in optimization, power systems, and smart grids/micro grids. He is a distinguished fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), a fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Engineering (NAE), and a fellow member of the Nigerian Academy of Science (NAS). He served as program director at the National Science Foundation (NSF) from 2001-2004 and as Electrical and Computer Engineering (EECE) Department chair at Howard University for 11 years. He holds a PhD from Howard University, an MSEE from Carnegie Mellon University, and an MS in systems engineering from the University of Pennsylvania. He is a recipient of numerous awards, including the coveted 1987 NSF Presidential Young Investigator award. Dr. Momoh has published several technical papers and bestselling textbooks on power systems, optimization, and smart grids.

�Aguas! Esta Biblia es la versi�n 1909. Usa t�rminos espa�oles MUY antiguos. Por ejemplo, en unos vers�culos refiere al coraz�n como "ri��n"; y a la salvaci�n como "salud". Desafortunadamente, compr� 5 para regalar a unos amigos en M�xico, y no las puedo usar.

�Beware! This Bible is the 1909 version. It uses very antiquated Spanish terms. For example, in some verses to refer to the heart, it uses "kidney," and for salvation it uses "health." Unfortunately I purchased 5 to give away to friends in Mexico, but I can't use them.
