Great book !

Since I am only a 1500 rated player I found this book to be very helpful and easy to understand. Even more important is the book is specific to pawn formations and the author walks you through the more common structures that come up in club/tournament play.

About the Author
Richard Newton is an entrepreneur, consultant and writer. After spending almost ten years writing about business for The Sunday Telegraph and The Mail on Sunday, Richard decided to switch sides, walk the talk and run his own business. He co-founded a software company that supplies brand management solutions for many of the world’s largest consumer brands.

I loved this book

A very successful friend recently told me that the secret of his success was that he always thinks big. So when I saw this book I decided to see what tips it might have.

I loved this book. It is easy to read and jammed packed full of great practical ideas and tips.

I kept having to put the book down to jot down new ideas that I wanted to implement straight away. Less than 24 hours later I have already used some of them successfully to take a new business venture to the next level.

If you want to take your business, your thinking and your life to the next level then this book is a must read.

This book offers a mental journey with the energy, pace, and impact of a Cirque du Soleil performance.

As I sometimes do, I read this book in combination with another, published in 1959: David J. Schwartz's The Magic of Thinking Big: Set Your Goals High...and Then Exceed Them. There are differences between them, of course. (How could there not be?) However, both stress the great importance of personal accountability, of taking ownership of the consequences of one's decision. I agree that we cannot control everything that happens to us but we can control how we respond to whatever happens to us. Also, both David Schwartz and Newton are convinced -- as am I -- that most human limits are self-imposed. This is what Henry Ford had in mind many years ago when observing, "Whether you think you can or think you can't, you're probably right."

Newton has the significant advantage of calling upon extensive research in neuroscience that was not available to Schwartz 55 years ago. (However, there have been two updated editions of the Schwartz book but the key insights and recommendations remain the same, as has human nature.) Aristotle observed long ago, "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit." Perhaps Newton had that thought in mind when developing these "Nine Habits of Thinking Big," accompanied by my annotations:

1. Swim Don't Float [or Sink]: Keep moving (especially in rough water) and in the right direction. Not all change is progress but no change, no movement, is stagnation. Newton also warns against being carried along by what others think and do.

2. Clear Some (Head) Space: Mental clutter accumulates fast and obstructs and/or distracts focused thinking. F. Scott Fitzgerald once suggested that "the test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposed ideas in mind at the same time and still retain the ability to function." That's two ideas, not several dozen. Whenever I need to clear my mind, I take a brisk walk or listen to Glenn Gould's performance Bach's Goldberg Variations.

3. Feed Your Mind: The human mind really does have a sponge-like capacity that can be increased substantially. I "feed" mine with what I learn from others' minds but, daily, I also concentrate on strengthening certain cognitive skills. Each human life is a work-in-progress, with attitudes and behavior guided by habits. Many people are mentally and/or spiritually anorexic.

4. Notice Things: We tend to see so much but notice so much less. Yogi Berra: "You can observe a lot by just watching."

5. Change Reality (...Don't Deny It): In other words, replace an unacceptable reality with one that is worthy of what you value, perhaps even cherish.

6. Have a Big Ego and a Small Ego: This is a paradox. Newton's comments remind me of Socrates' response when told that he was the wisest man in the world. "If so, it is because all I know is that I know nothing." Only someone with both a big ego and small ego could say that.

7. Know Your Weapon: The term "weapon" has several meanings. Newton's point is that we need to be able to attack but also to defend. Perhaps it is having highly developed inductive and deductive skills or it could be a refusal to remain silent during a moral crisis.

8. Travel Light: No excess mental "baggage." There is much to be said for following lean thinking principles that include constant pruning. What Ernest Hemingway once characterized as "a built-in, shock-proof crap detector" will also come in handy. You get the idea.

9. Twang: Somewhat similar to a "Eureka!" moment. Newton characterizes it as a "click." During more than 20 years of classroom teaching, I could see it in the eyes of certain students: they "got it" when others didn't.

Richard Newton provides in this "little book" an abundance of invaluable information, insights, and counsel (his and others') that can help many of those who read the book to "aim higher and go further than [they] ever thought possible." Yes, the material is remarkably informative but also very entertaining. I read it and then re-read it twice before embarking on the composition of this brief commentary. Each time I either learned something new or understood something better. Bravo!

A True Story Of Deliverance From Darkness.

This is an absolutely compelling read and is a book that will hold your attention from the very first page, although it is also a book which will shock and frighten many readers. No doubt there will be many scoffers but this is a book on a subject which we ignore at our peril.
The book is written from an autobiographical perspective, although the author's wife also has some input. Readers are presented with a detailed, in depth account of the experiences of this husband and wife "team" who were involved in numerous areas of the occult including satanism, witchcraft, wicca and vampirism to mention but a few. Their involvement is described with many confirmatory references which reveal the senior positions and levels that they "attained" during such involvement.
The reality of these "spiritual realms of darkness" emanate from the pages of this book which reveal the depth and extent to which a plethora of occultic practices have permeated all levels of our society, including sadly some elements of the church.
The book begins as the writer accounts his experiences of human "vampirism" where he describes that "you have no idea what it is like to awaken to the need for the taste of blood in your mouth". Thus begins the description of this "voyage" into darkness and deceit in pursuit of "power" and what was thought to be the "truth". A journey that will horrify and disturb many readers, who will likewise be astounded at the degree to which the occult has spread and how even "human sacrifice" is still practised in certain quarters.
The immense amount of detail and dimensions of the experiences described in this book are impossible to cover in a review. Suffice to say that a terrifying descent "headlong into hell" began to come "off the rails" one day when this satanist came across an envelope containing his bank statement and a series of processed cheques relating to the "church of satan". One cheque had been endorsed on the back with the words "I'll be praying for you in Jesus' name". Although this was instantly dismissed, the writer's occultic powers began to cease and he was left feeling weak, sick and exhausted.
From this point on we are presented with the account of a "new" journey which ultimately results in this husband and wife partnership both becoming "born again" Christians. A detailed account which is very moving and which shows clearly the Power of Deliverance through Jesus Christ. A revelation that no matter how far anyone has travelled along the road to depravity, there is still hope and Deliverance. An amazing true story which will elevate those in the darkest depths of depression.
Basing all comments upon a wealth of personal experience, the book declares that all satanists, irrespective of the type of their involvement, are ultimately vulnerable human beings who are victims of deceit and delusion by the master deceiver himself. The book elaborates in chapter 15 that whilst their practices are to be deplored, the Salvation of the individual is to be prayed for. That such individuals should also be compassionately treated as people who are often wounded emotionally and/or physically and that they should not be treated as pariahs as regrettably some churches do. The book declares that the Power of the Blood of Jesus Christ can truly "save to the uttermost".
In addition to this astonishing true story, the book also documents the route to Deliverance for those who wish to be freed from the shackles of the occult. For those who become disturbed whilst beginning to read this book I would personally encourage them to persevere. The story is true and the message is essential to our times. An excellent book.

Freedom for the enslaved ! Excellent book.

This book shows what should be obvious to anyone with some knowledge of witchcraft: occult knowledge is no knowledge at all, just a mess of tricks performed by demons to entrap people in a continuous search of power, fueled by greed, lust and selfishness. People jump from one kind of occult philosophy to another, losing their identities in the process and becoming slaves of whatever "magus" or "high priest" is in control of that occult group. After some time, people lose their will and start doing anything their spirits tell them to do.

This is total slavery, and it is surprising that those people think that occultism gives them supreme freedom and that Christianity is a religion of passive dumb people !

Living in Brazil and having relatives involved in voodoo , I am very well familiar with the power of evil spirits and the disastrous consequences of dealing with them.

This excellent book shows to Americans that evil spirits are not the "privilege" of Third World countries, but that they very well established in the USA.

The best part is the wonderful story of how the author was freed by God from the hands of Satan. When God wants someone, nothing can prevent Him from doing His will.

Don't bother about the negative reviews...it is pretty obvious that those people didn't even read the book, they are withches who got together to downgrade the ratings of this book and especially the other excellent book from the same author about Wicca. Read it and draw your own conclusions.

Very graphic and troubling but wonderful story of Redemption

This is a fascinating account of a man and his wife who became high priest and priestess in the Church of Satan. He documents how he got into the occult unwittingly as a child (every parent should take note about things that are not at all innocent) and once he got on that increasingly dark path, there seemed to be no way off it until God got hold of him. Satan is no match for the Sovereign God of the Universe, and brought this man to Redemption.

this book is a very comprehensive book with a lot of images of normal and abnormal findings in the abdominal and small parts sonograms.In your practice u ll use this book to compare the real life scanning with what so called"book case".

This is a very informative book. There are a lot of ultrasound images for pathologies. The quality of the US images are acceptable. I would have given this book a 5 star rating had it not been because some of the pictures are too dark while some are too bright. Or maybe it's just because the images were not taken in harmonics setting. I can't wait until they revise this book with higher quality US pictures.

Jon Moon is a trainer and consultant�in presenting business information clearly.�His clients include leading UK business schools and major international companies such as AIG and Unilever. To put it mildly, the course was quite eye opening. In a very effective manner, Mr. Moon demonstrated why certain, pretty standard ways of presenting and "enhancing" information actually achieved the opposite, and at the same time he showed alternatives. During the day, he covered graphs, tables, bullets; talked about PowerPoint and Excel; introduced the concept of WiT (Words in Tables) and generally covered a lot of ground on the aspects of presenting information. I came away from that course feeling embarrassed about some of the work I had produced in the (not too distant) past, and excited about the opportunities I now saw for presenting information in a new light.

Fast forward to 2008, I can say that that course has both changed how I look at information, and how I produce it. When Mr. Moon's book was published I purchased a copy, and I was glad to see that it has all the good things from the course and a lot more.

The book is loaded with examples of good and bad, but more importantly, it eloquently explains why certain charts or styles or tables will be effective, and why others are not. It is impossible to effectively summarize the book in a short book review, but here are some examples of what to expect (Amazon doesn't do tables in its reviews, so it doesn't look as good as it would it in a Word document):

Why bullet points often don't work well, and what to use instead:

Tips to improve bullets - provide a lead in, order
Introduces WiT, or Words in Tables

When graphs work and when they don't:

Avoid pie charts and clustered column charts
Be careful with color
Avoid legends, they create a puzzle
Lead in with a title that informs

Five big changes to improve your tables:

1. Remove unnecessary gridlines
2. Avoid too much emphasis
3. Sort out row and column order
4. Make compact
5. Give a lead in title

And never forget, that what you should put in front of your audience will always depend on the audience, the message you want to convey and the medium through which you are presenting.

The above only scratches the surface of these topics; the three chapters alone are worth the price of the book for everyone who works with financial information and presents data to others. In addition to these topics, Mr. Moon's book has chapters on making comparisons, slides, numbers and document design, as well as some more specific chapters on variance analysis and flash reports and organization charts. In an appendix Mr. Moon explains how to create some of his specific formats in Excel and Word.

Overall, this is a well written book, with entertaining quotes and excellent tips, and even if you just skim it you are bound to pick up some useful ideas. Not every chapter in the book is equally valuable, and there are some areas where I don't fully agree with Mr. Moon. However, there should be something for everyone in this book to take away, and a lot for most.

If you are interested in reading more about the topic, I recommend "The visual display of quantitative information", by Edward Tufte. This book contains the essay "the cognitive style of PowerPoint; Pitching out corrupts within", a must read if you work a lot with PowerPoint.

Refreshingly Simple and Practical and Great Support

I read this book recently and found the material to be refreshingly well communicated and very practical.

As someone who spends most of their business life preparing reports, proposals and presentations I've read many books of this type but I've never found one as easy to read and as practical as this one.

I admit I've been addicted to bullet points, poorly designed tables and oversized and overlabelled graphs. I can prepare above average business documents but that's not saying much. When you come across the odd professionally designed document you realise just how far from the mark you really are.

This book provided the right mix of high level and detail for me as a non-designer striving to improve the professionalism of my communications.

I was also very impressed with the range of downloads and references available on Jon Moon's website and I was so impressed to get an email response from Jon within a few hours of firing off half a dozen questions.

This book isn't the one stop shop for improving your output but it is a very worthwhile addition to my personal reference library.

I read every section 2-3 times just to ensure I captured each of the authors insights. As I applied each suggestion, the impact of my presentations increased (based on the feedback of my peers).

This book is a wonderful reinforcement of how the brain is such a powerful tool in our ability to be successful or not. Literally it is all in our head. I have enjoyed reading this over and over to reinforce the information. It's a fairly quick read but all information is important and relevant and would be a good book for anyone that wants to be successful.

I have "known" all my life that I created my reality - as opposed to imagining the possibilities but not knowing how the Law of Attraction works. This book reminded me that the very first step to achieving success is to imagine that which you would have. However without consistent attention we become distracted and forget what we are about. Like all Laws this one requires effort (as the book stated). So with the reminders in this book we can all realize that we draw into our lives what we think about from minute to minute - not what we desire or fear but what we think about when we aren't aware we are thinking. Try it! Thanks for this little book. I appreciate it.

Very easy to read book that tells it plain and simple, like the title states. I found it to the point without a lot of hoo-hah. Great book to take on a short flight. It is also a good book to go back to from time to time as it doesn't take long to get reacquainted.

Very sweet story

I took a chance on this book despite the stupid title and I'm glad I did. It's a clean romance about a h who steps in to 'save' her family from financial ruin, when her father loses the family money. She has 2 very self absorbed sisters who refuse to help out. The h's father contacts a distant relation, an old Duke and explains the family plight. The Duke suggests that one of the sisters goes to live with him for a few months and after that if he's happy, he'll make her a Duchess in the future. The older 2 sisters remember what an old dragon the Duke was and refuse to go, so the h goes off to make the sacrifice. She meets one of the Duke's relations, a very handsome Earl and starts to fall for him over time but she knows she can't go back on her promises to her family and the Duke.

In some ways it was predictable but it was such a delightful, happy read that it was well worth the time I spent reading it.

I thought that this was a good book.

I thought that this was a good book...but there was not enough romance between the main characters in the story...there was no holding hands, no kissing, there was no real affection between them..even if there are no love-making scenes I still wanna see real affection between the main characters...and in this story it just wasn't there..the focus was on everyone else except the main characters...

I was...bored. The whole book was in the main characters perspective the whole time. The way this book reads seems to just hover above the story, not giving to much detail/character development and at the same time allowing the reader just enough material to follow the story. Like I said, I was bored.
