Elizabeth Warren is a retired college professor of Political Science who continues to find the study of government exciting. Of particular interest today are the changes that are occurring in American society and their impact on our government’s policies. Warren took her graduate work fifteen years after receiving her B.A. degree in History from Bryn Mawr College. She received her Master’s degree from the University of Kansas and concluded her work for the doctorate in Political Science at the University of Nebraska. She also went into active politics in local government, serving as a Trustee and then Mayor of the Village of Glencoe, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. She has published books on subjects as disparate as the impact of the Gautreaux v Chicago Housing Authority court decision and the relationships between religion and politics. She also wrote a biography of a 19th Century Quaker who was a leader in the development of the Society of Friends in the Midwest. Warren’s husband was a Sears executive, and she has four grown daughters.

Prosperity, Peace and Respect: How Presidents Manage the People’s Agenda by Elizabeth Warren

“Prosperity, Peace and Respect” is an uneven book that discusses 20th-century presidential politics around three issues: the economy, foreign policy, and social stresses. Elizabeth Warren provides the masses with an easy to follow reference on 20th-century politics. This broad 202-page book includes the political issues from every president beginning with Theodore Roosevelt and up to George W. Bush.

Positives:
1. A well-written book. It’s brief and very easy to read.
2. Respectful and fair throughout. It’s a professional, professorial treatment.
3. Always an interesting topic, presidential history.
4. A very good format. Each chapter goes over each one of the three political issues for each president: the economy, foreign policy, and social stresses.
5. A good quick reference on where the 20th century presidents stood on the aforementioned three key issues.
6. Covers in general the main accomplishments of each presidential term. “Theodore Roosevelt’s work to balance the forces in the economy that appeared threatening to the public peace as well as the health and safety of the people were probably his greatest accomplishments as President.”
7. Curious tidbits provided. “William Taft had a serious physical problem: he was obese.”
8. Presidential philosophy provided. “He (Woodrow Wilson) understood that serving as President involved the exercise of power, but he thought of this as the power not to coerce but to persuade.”
9. Memorable quotes. “The lesson of 20th Century American history seems to suggest that no one theory is applicable to the economy all of the time.”
10. Overcoming challenges. “Franklin Roosevelt, taking office in 1933, sought legislation to advance the program of his illustrious fifth cousin whom FDR revered. Burdened by the Great Depression, with its 25% unemployment condition and the apparent resistance of the Supreme Court to rule against big business, Roosevelt fought for legislation to deal with the condition of the laboring man, the farmer’s need for a living income, fair labor standards and the right of workers to form unions to bargain collectively with business.”
11. Presidential goals. “One of Hoover’s aspirations was to virtually eliminate poverty in the United States. He worried about the 1920-22 depression which, fortunately, was short-lived.”
12. Warren provides her opinion but it’s done so in a measured manner. “By any measure, Herbert Hoover was a very good President of the United States. He coped as well as he could given the understandings of the American people and the economic system of his time. It was a great injustice that he was associated with the Depression for a generation after he served.”
13. Covers as you would expect noteworthy events in American history. “President Truman had the awesome responsibility to consider and decide whether to drop an atomic bomb on Japan in order to bring about the surrender of that country to the United States.”
14. Insight into the Kennedys never gets old. “Americans became excited about the trip to the moon when it was announced in 1969 that the first Apollo mission to land on the moon would occur during the summer.”
15. The incredible presidency of Lyndon Johnson.
16. Interesting look into Nixon. “In spite of the wrongs committed by Richard Nixon, hurting himself and others in the White House, he also served the country’s best interests in his five years as President, making progress in key foreign policy initiatives.”
17. The underappreciated presidency of Carter. “Jimmy Carter’s proudest achievement was the Camp David Accords between Egypt and Israel.”
18. What made Reagan a great president. “What Reagan did superbly well was to give Americans confidence in themselves and the nation.”
19. Clinton’s globalization and the Bushes.
20. Bibliography and notes included.
21. A great Kindle value at time of this review.

Negatives:
1. Uneven book. It’s understandable that presidents that served for more than one term would get more ink but it’s still uneven.
2. Perhaps unreasonable to expect much depth in 200 pages.
3. A bit on the dry side.
4. Too basic. I know it’s intended for the masses but dare I say this book was “dumbed down” to a fault.
5. Lack of charts and diagrams to complement the narrative.
6. Some presidents got the short end of the stick in this book: Warren Harding, Calvin Coolidge, and Gerald Ford come to mind.
7. Hard to put my finger on it but quite frankly I was expecting more. I would have liked to have seen more passion and Warren’s personality come out more.

In summary, it’s challenging to condense the presidential history of the 20th century in such a brief book. The book can serve as a good brief reference but it doesn’t flow smoothly and lacks depth. An average book from a great Senator, read as a quick reference.

They also pay close attention to students' real and potential problems in learning calculus. Nearly one-quarter of each text is devoted to exercises -- equivalent to a built-in workbook -- giving students plenty of opportunity for hands-on practice.

Preface

We have been very pleased with the enthusiastic response to the first eight editions of Calculus and Its Applications by teachers and students alike. The present work incorporates many of the suggestions they have put forward.

Although there are many changes, we have preserved the approach and the flavor. Our goals remain the same: to begin the calculus as soon as possible; to present calculus in an intuitive yet intellectually satisfying way; and to illustrate the many applications of calculus to the biological, social, and management sciences.

The distinctive order of topics has proven over the years to be successful—easier for students to learn, and more interesting because students see significant applications early. For instance, the derivative is explained geometrically before the analytic material on limits is presented. This' approach gives the students an understanding of the derivative at least as strong as that obtained from the traditional approach. To reach the applications in Chapter 2 quickly, we present only the differentiation rules and the curve sketching needed for those applications. Advanced topics come later when they are needed. Other aspects of this student-oriented approach follow below. Applications

We provide realistic applications that illustrate the uses of calculus in other disciplines. See the Index of Applications on the inside cover. Wherever possible, we have attempted to use applications to motivate the mathematics. Examples

The text includes many more worked examples than is customary. Furthermore, we have included computational details to enhance readability by students whose basic skills are weak. Exercises

The exercises comprise about one-quarter of the text—the most important part of the text in our opinion. The exercises at the ends of the sections are usually arranged in the order in which the text proceeds, so that the homework assignments may easily be made after only part of a section is discussed. Interesting applications and more challenging problems tend to be located near the ends of the exercise sets. Supplementary exercises at the end of each chapter expand the other exercise sets and include problems that require skills from earlier chapters. Practice Problems

The practice problems have proven to be a popular and useful feature. Practice Problems are carefully selected questions located at the end of each section, just before the exercise set. Complete solutions are given following the exercise set. The practice problems often focus on points that are potentially confusing or are likely to be overlooked. We recommend that the reader seriously attempt the practice problems and study their solutions before moving on to the exercises. In effect, the practice problems constitute a built-in workbook. Minimal Prerequisites

In Chapter 0, we review those concepts that the reader needs to study calculus. Some important topics, such as the laws of exponents, are reviewed again when they are used in a later chapter. Section 0.6 prepares students for applied problems that appear throughout the text. A reader familiar with the content of Chapter 0 should begin with Chapter 1 and use Chapter 0 as a reference, whenever needed. New in this Edition

Among the many changes in this edition, the following are the most significant:

Delta Notation We introduce delta notation in Chapter 0 and use it in our discussion of the derivative. As in previous editions, we have tried to minimize the use of complicated notation, preferring instead verbal descriptions. However, in the case of the delta notation, we feel that the clarity achieved is worth the extra notation.

Derivative as a Rate of Change We preview the derivative as a rate of change at the beginning of Chapter 1, anticipating the more detailed discussion in Section 1.8. Since students have difficulty interpreting the derivative as a rate of change, we felt it prudent to allow them to practice repeatedly with the concept.

Analysis of Data We added a broad theme that might best be described as "calculus for functions defined by data." Throughout the book, we include discussions about real-life applications whose underlying functions are defined by tables of data.

More on Regression (optional) We added the optional Section 7.6 on multiple and nonlinear regression analysis. The goal in this section is to provide a taste of what a business student will encounter in a course in regression analysis. Our emphasis is on using technology, especially spreadsheets, to do the computations for various flavors of regression (multiple-linear, quadratic, exponential, etc.).

Additional Technology (optional) The new technology appendix to Chapter 0 includes the graphing calculator material previously found within the chapter, a discussion of calculus and spreadsheets, and a new exercise set testing student technology skills.

Real-Life Data We have collected spreadsheets containing real-life statistical data and made them available to students and faculty on the Web site prenhall/goldstein.

Projects Each chapter now includes a project, designed to provide more open-ended problem solving, critical thinking, verbal expression, and integration of mathematical techniques, both manual and technological.

Other Changes We made improvements throughout the text based on suggestions from students, teachers, reviewers, and editors. Our thanks to all who assisted us with their valuable suggestions.

This edition contains more material than can be covered in most two-semester courses. Optional sections are starred in the table of contents. In addition, the level of theoretical material may be adjusted to the needs of the students. For instance, only the first two pages of Section 1.4 are required in order to introduce the limit notation.

A Study Guide for students containing detailed explanations and solutions for every sixth exercise is available. The Study Guide also includes helpful hints and strategies for studying that will help students improve their performance in the course. In addition, the Study Guide contains a copy of Visual Calculus, the popular, easy-to-use software for IBM compatible computers. Visual Calculus contains over 20 routines that provide additional insights into the topics discussed in the text. Also, instructors find the software valuable for constructing graphs for exams.

An Instructor's Solutions Manual contains worked solutions to every exercise.

Good Text for Basic Calculus Concepts

Contrary to what some other reviewer have claimed, I found this book quite helpful. It provides the basic concepts of Calculus such as limits and derivative rules and applications, exponents and logarithms, integrals, double variable calculus, trig functions, techniques of integrations, an introduction to differential equations, and even series.
I found this book very easy to use. It presents the information in a very terse, straightforward manner. Basically, it cuts down on the mathematical theory and allows students to solve the important equations quick and easy. Instead of being lost in complicated definations of derivations, I was able to quickly find derivations and discover their uses in functions.
This is the book that I used for my "Calculus for Social and Natural Science Majors" course. Personally, I feel that I learned much from this book. I never took a Calculus class in high school and wasn't the most mathematically inclinded so i was sure that Calculus was going to be tough. This book made it really easy to understand and somehow Calculus turned into one of my easiest classes.
This book, however, is not for those who plan on taking higher level Calculus classes. It has most of the fundamentals, but not more advanced topics. Also, several topics are presented out of order from a regular Calc 1 class (so I'm told). For instance, calculus of several varibles--a topic usually covered in a third level course--occurs before techniques of intregration.
The book is quite suitable for a Business/Natural Science Calc class, as it was intended to be used for, and overall seems to make the subject easier. It provides a good means of jumping right into the subject.

Best for basics

This is an excellent place to start - if you just started calculus, or need a thorough back-to-basics guide.

Concepts are explained patiently and excellently unlike many others that cover the same basic concepts but rush through the 'why's and simply throw formulae at you. On the other hand, the book is kind of verbose and a slow starter. It may not be right if you are looking for a quick tour of the basics. But if you are willing to invest a little more time, it's well worth it. For me, the practical illustrations alongside each concept, were a big incentive and don't make you feel like you are just plowing through a math textbook.

Whats the difference between the 8th and 7th eds?

The book itself is OK at best. The author makes use of OK examples but has some very good questions. Too bad its hard to solve the more advanced questions he asks from the examples given.
In compairing the 7th and 8th editions there is almost NO difference between the two. I think I ran accross under 10( at most) total changes, and they were VERY minor. Why print another edition? More money to charge university students is probably why.
Oh, and I did very well in the 2 semesters...so Im not just bitching either!

The author organizes his thoughts of the Venetian mosaics on a room by room basis. Insightful comparisons are made with other eras of mosaic cultures. An excellent book for students of mosaic art who want to study this particular, worthy genre.
Perhaps the book's strongest appeal is the choice of color plates (photographs) the author chose to include in this book. All color plates are reproduced in a stunning high qualty for the price you pay. The number of color plates, however, are somewhat limited and leave you hungry for more. Perhaps that's caused by the subject matter. Overall, I'm very satisfied with this purchase.

About the Author

SUNIL CHOPRA

Sunil Chopra is the IBM Distinguished Professor of Operations Management and Information Systems at the Kellogg School of Management. He has served as the interim dean and senior associate dean for curriculum and teaching, and the codirector of the MMM program, a joint dual-degree program between the Kellogg School of Management and the McCormick School of Engineering at Northwestern University. He has a PhD in operations research from SUNY at Stony Brook. Prior to joining Kellogg, he taught at New York University and spent a year at IBM Research.

Professor Chopra’s research and teaching interests are in supply chain and logistics management, operations management, and the design of telecommunication networks. He has won several teaching awards at the MBA and Executive programs of Kellogg. He has authored more than 40 papers and two books.

He has been a department editor for Management Science and an associate editor for Manufacturing & Service Operations Management, Operations Research, and Decision Sciences Journal. His recent research has focused on understanding supply chain risk and devising effective risk mitigation strategies. He has also consulted for several firms in the area of supply chain and operations management.

PETER MEINDL

Peter Meindl is a portfolio manager with Kepos Capital in New York. Previously, he was a research officer with Barclays Global Investors, a consultant with the Boston Consulting Group and Mercer Management Consulting, and the director of strategy with i2 Technologies. He holds PhD, MS, BS, and BA degrees from Stanford, and an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern.

Fantastic with clear, real examples.

This is a very well written textbook that focuses predominantly on the business side than the engineering side of supply chain management. It does go into some mathematical details in the development of various models and equations and does a fantastic job of explaining how to solve problems with them AND how to use Excel.

However, what it really does well is emphasize to the manager who may or may not be strong in math or even care for it what the equations and models MEAN and WHY are they set up the way they are. The book assumes a great deal that those people who need to actually solve the problems, typically industrial engineers and operations researchers, will pick up the techniques and more realistic problems elsewhere. This is more for the manager to be able to understand whatever an engineer might be talking about.

Off the mathematical side, the book is heavy with real-world examples which it gives in exhaustive detail, and it takes great care in comparing and contrasting examples when trying to illustrate a point or go further into detail with some concept. You'll revisit the same examples over and over again but with new clarity as the text dives deeper and deeper into the successes and failures and practices of businesses as it needs to clarify something new when a new topic is introduced. In fact, you may read through an example and think to yourself, "Yeah, but why doesn't affect it?" only to find out, yes, it does, but the textbook moved it to a more appropriate section where that "something else" had more to do with the new topic. As such, this book keeps a very tight grip on any point it tries to make, and I've not read ONE instance of it breaking off into an unnecessary tangent or becoming convoluted with unnecessary details. It is to the point.

Finally, it is analytical in nature. When a topic is discussed, there is no silly "in an ideal world, the manager should do this and that" since it rightly understands we don't live in an ideal world. It simply looks at what other businesses have done and focuses on what made them work or didn't work.

However, it gets 4 stars for one reason: its organization of tables and charts is a mess. You may look at a table that gives percentages and wonder why it's organized the way it is; it is neither decreasing or increasing in percentages, nor is it alphabetized, nor is it in an order that makes sense based on a preceding paragraph's discussion. For example, if you're trying to find the largest impact on making your business global instead of local, you'll see about 20 different reasons, but you'll need to parse through them to find that biggest one. And, like most things, it is typically more than one answer, and they'll be everywhere. Charts are not as bad but can still be a bit irritating; axes may not be properly defined, and you may see some instances where the X and Y axes are switched (this happens sometimes when visualization is key, such as in seeing how the temperature changes according to altitude, and we immediately recognize altitude as an up-and-down thing even though it "technically" should be on the horizontal axis as an independent variable).

However, as per the parenthetical, there is often an explanation for why such a switch happens. Not so here. It's nothing too major, but it can be a bit jarring at first glance, giving the need for a double-take.

Still, in trying to focus on the theoretical foundations for why a supply chain works and why it wouldn't work, this book's graceful interlacing of SOLID examples and staying away from "too abstract, too ideal" scenarios is amazing, and it deserves a spot on any bookshelf.

Densely written but rewarding treatise

Elaine Scarry's "The Body in Pain", an influential study on the relationship between pain, torture, warfare and creativity is a stunning achievement, from the standpoint of Marxism. I confess that I have not read the sections on the structure of warfare, but I was extremely impressed with the passages on torture. Scarry's central premise is that pain, a radically subjective, hence inexpressible and incommunicable experience, results, during the process of torture, in destroying, or deconstructing the victim's voice (his or her power of articulation) and by extension, the victim's world. It is the prisoner's pain, incommunicable because unsharable, which is denied by the torturer as pain but translated as the wholly illusory phenomenon of power, that of the torturer and the regime he represents. These parts of the book are expounded with considerable insight and sophistication, in dense and convoluted prose. The second part, dealing with how pain is converted to creativity, explains how the radical subjectivity and inexpressibility of the sufferer's pain is mitigated into the objective (hence sharable and communicable) activity of work, which is a self-imposed, milder and socially more profitable form of pain. This treatise is absolutely vital reading for any one who aspires to seriously dabble in literature, psychology or philosophy. A tour de force.

Helpful in Working With Torture Victims

I have worked with several individuals who suffered extreme physical torture sometime during their lives. Scarry's work helped me to understand the internal world of the sufferer in ways I would never have even begun to approach. Each one of these individuals lacked the language to discuss their experiences. What they were left with was inarticulatable images, physical sensations, emotions, profound helplessness and alienation. Scarry's book helped me find language to give to my patients -- language that helped to normalize their reaction to, and experience of inexplicable events. Her exploration of the abyss of human destruction is accomplished such original, humane, and thoughtful detail. Her book is an ingenius work of art.

The Greatest Book on the Question: "Why do we create?"

Few works of contemporary philosophy are so underrated (not to mention mis-shelved) as this sweeping study of the relationship between human pain and human creation. I frequently recommend the book to people who have been intimidated by "phenomenology", and who need to return to the roots of this term: the study of raw sense perceptions.
To Scarry, pain not only feels negative but actually IS negation. Pain erases all other perceptions of the world, and it also kills language -- the root our ability to reach out to others and build a world together.
The book begins by considering the obvious fact that "intense pain is indescribable," then moves outward into the political consequences of this inexpressibility. Pain survives in the culture, and can be used as a political tool, precisely because of its muteness. This first half of the book, entitled "Unmaking", corresponds well to Dante's Inferno. Through a study of torture and (less helpfully) war, Scarry details the process by which the human ability to create, and thus to be, is destroyed for political purposes.
The book's second part, corresponding to Dante's Purgatorio, describes how humans move out of pain by creating the world of made objects. The reading of the Hebrew and Christian scriptures that begins this section deserves much wider attention. Scarry reads these texts as an archetypical story of how pain led to creation. Scarry presents this story with a warm, generous, jargon-free style that is welcoming to the intelligent layman.
Parts of this book are, perhaps, more dated than others. The latter sections in each of the two halves (the first on war, the latter on the texts of Marx) seem to step down from the pinnacles of each half's beginning. The reader can be forgiven for setting down the book at the end of the section on the scriptures, feeling that Scarry's powerful effect is complete.
In a world where contemporary philosophy and theory are too easily hijacked by political trends, Scarry's book is a welcome reminder that we are all bodies, and that beneath our divisions of race, class, and gender, we all share a pain that drives us to create our world.
