A new favorite

This little book is exactly what I've been wishing for! For several years, I've been a fan of Blake Snyder's _Save the Cat_ and his "beat sheet." However, StC was written for screenwriters, and some of its beats don't easily translate to novels. In this book, Gwen Hayes lays out a four-act structure and a fresh set of story beats that are specific to the romance genre. The book is concise, engaging, and useful for any subgenre. I appreciated that Hayes doesn't tailor her advice to market trends, or make assumptions about gender, sexuality, or heat level. Romance is romance. This book isn't concerned with chiseled abs or stormy eyes*; it's about the bones of writing a compelling relationship.

I know I'll be keeping this one on my shelf and recommending it often.

*Not that there's anything wrong with chiseled abs or stormy eyes. Big fan of both.

A romance-specific book on plot that's concise, to the point, and hilarious.

I loved this book! It is short -- and that's a good thing. The speed with which she covers the different beats helped me get the whole movement in my head more quickly, rather than dwelling too long on each one. The music references are actually helpful too, not just funny. Although they are. :D

This book was like the missing piece to plot for me. I've always struggled with plotting -- probably because imo your average plot is relatively simple compared to when a romance is running along side it. This helped me a great deal to see a framework I could work within.

Also, I loved that this book treated the main characters as H1 and H2 and did not give them special roles relating to gender. This is not only helpful if you're hoping to write GLBT fiction, but ALSO it helps us not treat the characters in a sexist way. They're both unique characters that have traits that may or may not relate to their sex. The other romance fiction writing book I've tried to read was so weighed down with sexist ideas, I had to stop. Thank you for this book, Gwen!

Concise. Impressive. Exactly what I needed to further my romance writing.
I've been researching story structure for seven years, and there's nothing out there quite like this. Hayes impressed me so much with her concisely written, hilarious approach to structuring the romance arc, that I bough my critique partner a copy of this book the same day I read it. Like me, she's read all the gurus out there, all the authors who discuss story structure, but Hayes did something different. She divulged the secrets I need to make my romance stories resonate with readers.
Initially I thought the book was too short, but therein lies the beauty of her work.
This book is straightforward, humorous, and complete. It's a quick read, without rhetoric, equipped with real life story structure, and well-worth the money. Perfect for professionals of the romance industry.

Recently, I finished this great, broad, historical, and significant endeavor. Let me begin by expressing my appreciation of Jared Diamond’s wonderful ability to simplify a very complex topic and related ideas. This alone, makes this read a great one. Too, there a few gems of humor and wit within the pages which caught my eye and mind. Don’t get me wrong though. The pages are filled with complex data, examples, and comparisons. Upon more than one occasion, my understanding necessitated the rereading of paragraphs and pages.

Before I proceed into deeper thoughts, I must admit the duration of this read as being conducted well over an extended timeframe. I began reading it years ago, stopped, and then started again. Over the course of the last several months, I recommitted and achieved.

In thoughtful detail, Diamond seeks to explain why certain groups of people have been successful over the course of human events and history, while others, in comparison, are not. It should be noted, the idea of “success” is very subjective. So, success in this case, is related to Western ideas of technological development, exploration, and conquest - generally described as one group of people gaining control or influence over another. An effective description of this is the Spanish conquest and colonization of the “New World,” especially the Aztecs and Incas. This example, though quite large in scope, and as pointed out by Diamond, has occurred throughout human history in large and small ways involving a multitude of others groups of people, both known and unknown.

In short, I believe Diamond does well in addressing the impact and luck of geography and resources, as well as, the influences of more innate human characteristics and variety. The debate of nature versus nurture is here too contained. In the past, and not only in recent history, humans have expressed understandings of success in terms of innate differences which must exist between people - obviously though, those in power and dominate are able to define and express such ideas. However, Diamond looks beyond this and recognizes the complexity, and ultimately more profound influence of reality, nurture. In this sense though, it is not simply human nurturing and choice, it is the opportunities presented to humans, in difference places, at different times, to take advantage of their earthly surroundings and the ability to nurture developments, or not.

This read is filled with a plethora of well detailed examples which come to show how access, or not, to certain elements leads to the success and superiority which has been described and known by those in power, throughout history. So, today, when certain people look down upon others and their lack of some qualities or characteristics, Diamond’s historical analysis provides engaging insight beyond and through the bias.

Who we are presently is the result of all the past experiences of the human ancestors who preceded us, and furthermore, our development and success, in comparison to other humans, is simply more so the result of the access we have had to a confluence of resources and circumstances which allowed us to dominate other groups of humans with less access to the same. As groups of humans defined through sociological processes, we are no more intelligent, healthy, or physiologically better than the whole of humanity understood to exist through anthropology, biology, and any other area of study.

“We all know that history has proceeded very differently for peoples from different parts of the globe...Those historical inequalities have cast long shadows on the modern world, because the literate societies with metal tools have conquered or exterminated the other societies. While those differences constitute the most basic fact of world history, the reasons for them remain uncertain and controversial.” In this work, Diamond splendidly explains how, “History followed different courses for different peoples because of differences among peoples’ environments, not because of biological differences among peoples themselves.”

Great stories, controversial for some

This book contains a number of fascinating historical stories and studies on the evolution of civilized society. The opening discussion of the battle at Cajamarca between the Spaniards and Incas, including translated first-hand accounts, is both riveting and thought-provoking.

The book suffers from two main defects. First, the author spent most of his career working in New Guinea and too frequently uses this direct and narrow experience to add credibility to a more general assertions about other societies. These provincial interruptions sometimes interrupt the flow of an otherwise fine exposition.

Second, the author seems intent to refute the idea that the current state of human society - with widely varying adoption of technology and social standards i different geographical areas - is the consequence of mathematically closed-form natural laws which can be employed to predict not only history from first principles, but future societal trends. This may be a commonly held belief in some backwards social science departments, but has already been widely discredited. The authors tilting at this windmill is sometimes tedious.

It's worth mentioning the contrast between this book and Darwin's Origin of Species. The latter still seems intellectually fresh, despite its elaborate detail and minor errors in thinking. Darwin's thoughts are shaped by his travels but not limited by them.

OK as an overview of negotiation, very little practical value for purchasing professionals

I had high hopes of this (expensive) paperback, since there are very few (if any) contemporary books dedicated to negotiation from the buyers' perspective. Alas, this book disappointed me on many (all) fronts.

1. This book provides an OK review of negotiation, but very bland and far from comprehensive or cohesive. It is a messy hodge-podge of topics and issues. While the Red Sheet methodology and its 4 sections (S.T.E.P.) provide some unifying framework, the book would certainly benefit from a critical editor and his/her Red Ink methodology!

However, there are very few practical and specific issues that directly relate to purchasing and procurement functions. Therefore the title is misleading. Seasoned professionals such as myself will find nothing of interest here, while young purchasing professionals will be overwhelmed by 350 or so pages and a myriad of steps and "models".

2. There are 6 framed practical examples in boxes (presumable important). Of those only half are purchasing examples (pages 206, 298 and 304), the other three have nothing to do with purchasing (pages 159, 162, 165)

3. Important topics of interest to most purchasing professionals, such as negotiating simultaneously with multiple suppliers or local agents, sole-source and single-source negotiations are not covered at all (at least I could not find them in the book).

4. The style is dry and uninspiring. It reads like a textbook, academic style is used, such as 'Karrass (1996) states "in life you don get what you deserve, ..."')as if Karrass' book is a seminal work! I had to force myself to keep reading.

5. The structure of the book (and by that I mean the order of the chapters) is weird and methodologically unsound. Things just don't follow a they should and there is no flow between chapters. For instance, "Defining outcomes", in other words deciding what you want and setting your negotiating goals (one of the first things you need to do in every negotiation) is the title of Chapter 9. The preceding is chapter 8, titled "Game theory in negotiation". "Negotiating across cultures" is chapter 5, followed by the chapter called "Power".

6. There is a plethora of doubtful "models", all given strange acronyms, some that mean nothing (RACI, RAQSCI), others that are easy to remember (SOAP, ACE, STEP, COW) but there is so many of them that it starts getting blurred after a while.

In conclusion, I wasted $50 or so, should be able to claim it on tax as a legitimate business expense, although it is anything but.

A comprehensive manual

This is a user-friendly guide to negotiation that, although employing catchy acronyms, places these firmly in context, using a theoretical base supported by experience from the field.

I was interested in whether the author is a training specialist or a procurement professional, and on finding out more I was pleased to discover that he has an important body of work in both, as well as being an author.

Having spent 15 years in procurement and now working abroad and in two languages and across cultures, I was particularly interested in reading the section that pertains to cross-cultural negotiation. There are numerous methodologies, laid out step-to-step, which is invaluable in the field, where purely understanding the theories isn't enough, one has to be able to apply them, at times under pressure. Having said that, a key theme in the book is good preparation.

This work contains a number of alternative (or complementary) models. It is aimed at those who are already practising in the field, for whom it is a rich resource. A must-read for those who need to apply purchasing theory across different domains, or as a resource for an in-office team library.

About the Author

Great true story,amazing couple, shows how adversity brings out the best in some people. Folks who moan and groan about how life isn't fair should have a read of this to get things in perspective. I did see Sam's Australian Story on television, so definitely wanted to read about him and Jenny. One gets no negative vibes whatsoever when reading about Sam's lows, which are far outweighed by his attitude, which leads him to experience highs others will only dream about.

Pefect for those of us who have been out of school for a number of years

I have been out of school for ten years and it feels like I have forgotten every single thing I learned in my math classes. I bought the OG Quant Review and became completely disheartened upon reviewing it. I tried the GMAT for Dummies, but I'm embarassed to say I found that a little overwhelming, too. (I feel like I need to point out my under-grad GPA was 3.8, so I'm far from being a dummy, but that is how I felt after not using math for ten years.) I then bought the Manhattan GMAT Foundations of Math and I am very pleased with it so far. The author says it's a comprehensive guide to help us remember all the things we once knew, but have since forgotten. This is EXACTLY what I needed. This book reviews the basics. It is not an in-depth study guide. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has been out of school for a number of years and feels overwhelmed at the thought of the quant section of the GMAT.

Fundamental Review of GMAT Math but only if you need it

Foundations of GMAT Math is the second edition of the book dedicated to a review of basic math principles. If you picked a GMAT Math book and having a hard time with it, this book is for you. Prepare to see pie charts explaining factions, multiplications table, explanations of what a multiple or prime is and how to factor numbers. If you have not faced math (or were afraid to) in the past 5 years, this book is for you. Here are some important facts:

PROS:
- Very thorough
- Fixed all(?) of the previous typos
- Significantly reworked and improved the sequence of topics (now arithmetic is before word problems)
- Added Arithmetic (2nd edition only)
- Great coverage of coordinate geometry
- Helpful and valuable divisibility and exponents section
- TONS of bonus questions online (500+ of GMAT-format questions)
- Have not verified every question, but hoping for quality better than the first edition (had many mistakes)

CONS:
- The book has 500 practice questions but they are not in a GMAT format, rather a math-textbook format
- Massive! Massive (see my images I uploaded comparing it to the previous edition) 500 full-size pages - I think the expectation is that you skip parts that you know
- Some shortcuts (such as diamond method of solving quadratic equations) are confusing to those educated in formal math (but then those probably won't be using this book)
- Easy (i know it is supposed to be), but still - only easy questions

Bottom line: if you are comfortable with other MGMAT books, this book is probably not for you. If you are uneasy about math, give this book a try - you don't regret it. It is fantastic value for the 800 questions it offers. Would also recommend you pick up Number Properties and Word Translations by Manhattan GMAT. If you have purchased a full Manhattan GMAT set of books and hesitating between this book and Kaplan's version, definitely get this one - it integrates better.

A bit too fundamental

While it was a decent review of the basics, and it reminded me of a couple of things I forgot I had forgotten- it's quite basic (I don't think this got far beyond Jr. high/very basic high school math)

The valuable thing about this book is that it tells you specifically what the gmat likes; how the gmat likes to manipulate numbers; and a few tricks they like to use, so it's good for insight into the test, it was a bit to basic for me to be happy with the purchase.
