About the Author

Joan Littlefield Cook is a Professor of Psychology and current chairperson of the Psychology Department at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. As an undergraduate she majored in Psychology at Tennessee Technological University. She earned a Master’s and Ph.D. in Psychology and Human Development at Vanderbilt University. Joan has taught courses for more than 20 years related to child and adolescent development, educational psychology, and cognitive psychology. Students have always appreciated her knowledge of the field and her ability to present information in a way that is useful, motivating, and friendly. The Student Association at the University of Wisconsin-Madison voted her as one of their most outstanding professors, and the UW-Whitewater Psychology Student Organization presented her with their Excellence in Teaching Award. Joan's research is on mathematical problem solving and cognitive development, and she is currently involved in projects to support and assess critical thinking in college students.

Greg Cook is a Professor of Psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Greg majored in Psychology at the University of Dayton and later received his Ph.D. in Psychology at Vanderbilt University. Greg has worked in higher education for more than 25 years. He’s taught courses in child development, research methods, statistics, and related topics at Whitewater as well as at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Vanderbilt University. At Whitewater Greg received a department award and also a College of Letters and Sciences award for excellence in teaching. Students consistently comment on his ability to present difficult information in a clear and understandable way. Greg’s research on cognitive development has been published in scholarly journals such as Child Development, Developmental Psychology, and the Journal of Experimental Child Psychology. He also collaborated with colleagues in the College of Education on studies published in the Journal of Experimental Education, the Journal of Research & Development in Education, and the Journal of Reading Education. Currently, Greg is the Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at UW-Whitewater.

About the Author

Pierre Capretz is the creator of French in Action and a pioneer in video-based foreign-language instruction. He taught French at Yale University from 1956 to 2003 and was director of the Yale Language Laboratory from 1963 to 2000. Barry Lydgate is professor of French at Wellesley College.

Best French learning book!

Bonjour! This is a very good book and very useful when accompanied by its workbook and dvds.

I took French beginner's course at UC Berkeley Extension and they recommended this book. I was very happy with their recommendation.
There are tons of french teaching coursed and books out there in the market. Choosing the right book with a combination material is the right way to start. Do not get confused with so many authors and editions. Just stick to one and buy the accompanying dvds, workbook and voila! you are all set.

Self-learning is a bit difficult, I suggest joining a good institute and follow their process to learn. French is a difficult language to learn and to hone the skills esp. in speaking. The pronunciation is really what that matters when learning French. So go for it and Bonne chance!

Now THIS is a French home study worth every cent! With DVDs, a coordinating text and a workbook, learning just happens. The DVD content was developed by knowledgeable educators. Theres instructional classroom time. An entertaining video of French people going through daily life to reinforce what was taught in class. Other French media is also included to add cultural interest. I've tried several other means of learning the language. This one is superb!

Included are the romantic outpourings of celebrated writers George Sand, Virginia Woolf, Ernest Hemingway, Zelda and F. Scott Fitzgerald whose literary talents make their correspondence a model for any aspiring lover. Perhaps less gifted in their command of language, but certainly no less heartfelt, are selections from such notables as Harry Truman, Abigail Adams, Ronald Reagan, George Bush and an adoring Elvis fan from New Jersey. While reading through too many of these missives in one go might send some readers on an emotional roller coaster, dipping into the collection here and there will be inspiring for those who seek to command the attention of their loved ones. Not surprisingly, some of the most passionate declarations of love herein were uttered by lovers who later proved fickle. But there are some unexpected revelations, too: the ostensibly reserved George Bush, for example, is an effusive epistolary lover. A brief introduction to each letter gives some background about the writer and the recipient. Photographs accompany some of the letters. The correspondents include such people as Harry Truman, Jack London, and Sarah Bernhardt. Reading through the letters, readers see vivid examples of how the expression and the language of love have changed over the years. When one considers how e-mail and instant messaging are changing the face of even our most intimate communications, these letters recall a different and sometimes gentler time. Reading some of them will give teens a peek into the private thoughts of people whose names they have seen in books or heard about in class. It might even inspire them to write some letters of their own.

The letters are reproduced with spelling and grammatical errors intact. Most are by English speakers, and most are from the 20th century. Each letter is prefaced by a brief biographical introduction describing the context in which the letter was written. The letters represent love in its many varieties lover to lover, friend to friend, fan to idolized star and are grouped by type, such as tender, forbidden, passionate, or painful. They all provide an intimate glimpse into the lives of well-known men and women. Recommended for pubic libraries. The Love Letters of Dylan Thomas has greater literary significance and will be useful to students of this Welsh poet. In his letters, Thomas comments on his writing, works by other people, and his feelings about events in his life as they affect his writing. Lynch presents a variety of letters written to the various women Thomas loved, including his first love, the women he developed relationships with during his marriage, and his most enduring and passionate love his wife, Caitlin. I bought this as a gift for my fiance for Valentine's Day and was really jealous. I kept thinking of other things I maybe could give him because this book was so great. I was perusing my bookshelf looking for something and what do you know? I did own it! I had bought it many years before and it had gotten tucked back into the corner! I knew I liked it!

I have read reviews of this book where people complained that the letters featured were not "romantic" enough. If however, you read the preface of the book the author is clear that the letters were chosen for the depth of feeling they convey and not always romantic love. I enjoyed the book very much and keep it as a coffee table book in my home.

This book is a beautiful collection of deep and candid feelings of love and admiration. I hope to one day share this book with my future husband, wherever he may be. This is an inspiring book. An amazing feature is that writers, artists, composers such as Mozart, American Presidents and other famous people we incorporate ideas and generate thoughts about have part of their souls exposed to us in each page. We are all the same in God's eyes and feelings of love have always been. Nothing's new; only repeated and celebrated.

Standard dog training has long advocated the use of force choke collars, sharp smacks, harsh language. Fennell, a dog trainer in England for 30 years, wants to change all that. Expanding upon the theories of horse trainer Monty Roberts (the basis for The Horse Whisperer), Fennell believes one can best train dogs by emulating natural behaviors, that is, by treating them as they would treat each other in the wild. Her intelligent, straightforward and humane method has engendered controversy and increasing enthusiasm. After Fennel's dog Purdey went manic, injured Fennell's young children and had to be euthanized, she was fearful of owning a dog again. Lured back into it by the pleasure of showing spaniels, she adopted a high-strung young shepherd, Sasha, and investigated alternative training methods. Fennell's simple and succinct method posits that domesticated dogs are confused, believing themselves to be the pack leaders, and humans their subordinates. Fennell retrains dogs to accept a human as their alpha leader. She spurns the use of force, even in training language, employing instead a system of Pavlovian rewards. Fennell, a longtime dog owner, trainer, and champion show-dog manager, provides a comprehensive guide for creating peaceful coexistence between dogs and their owners. An advocate of nonviolent pet training, Fennell shows readers how to successfully train their canine companions using gentle, respectful techniques and also shares anecdotes and advice from her years of experiences (both good and bad). Fennell's techniques appear to deal efficiently with canine problem behaviors by teaching owners to establish leadership while eliminating separation anxiety, nervous aggression, and destructive behaviors, such as biting. She also notes ways to reassure overprotective dogs and much, much more. Fennel emphasizes that there is no quick fix for most of these behavior issues; her methods require time and a lot of patience. Although every training technique she outlines might not work with every dog, her book contains quite a lot of useful information. The most effective approach living with dogs I've ever tried.

I was ready to put this book down after finishing the very long introduction because she mentioned Skinnerian conditioning which I associate with clicker training, and making yourself the alpha in the pack, which I associate with a certain TV trainer who urges what he calls "dominance" and what I call harsh and destructive. I'm so glad I continued reading. This book is profound and the approach is loving, gentle, and is proving highly effective with my 65 lb, 8 year old anxious and overprotective Dingo mix.

By "alpha", the author means becoming a trusted leader. "She doesn't mention "dominant" once! By a Skinnerian approach she means using praise and treats as rewards, and withholding of them to communicate displeasure, The hardest thing is teaching myself to consistently apply what the author teaches. With everything I and my wife learn and apply, Rusty gets more and more relaxed, calm, and confident. The stakes are high: the dog's safety, the safety of people and other animals my very powerful dog interacts with, our quality of life with our dog, and his quality of life.

What if??

I'm not going to spout sources, examples or references to wolf packs or whatever else has already been said in the reviews.

Does it work? So far, yes it has helped my dog and her issues with us coming and going, not responding when we call her and panting and pacing when it rains. Do I know exactly why it has helped her, no I don't. Could she have believed she was in charge, absolutely.

So, what if...

What if Jan Fennell is right? What if our dogs issues are all because they are confused about their role in our world? What if our dogs believe they are responsible for us, for taking care of us and that is what leads to a host of problems? What if it really is like being in a place where no one speaks your language and you are doing the best you can to figure it all out? What if all those issues can be resolved by removing the responsibility from them and teaching them that we are the caregivers, the protectors, the leaders of the pack?

I don't know if this book is the end all be all to dog behavior, I do know it is a far kinder, gentler way of dealing with dog training and if in the end it makes my dogs less stressed, less worried and more at ease in the world, well that is a great thing.

Read the book, see if it makes sense to you, in the end you have to do what you think is best for your dog!

This book will change your life....

A must-read for any dog owner. I am the owner of 2 bichon cross bitches, 1 very easy-going and sweet, the other very troublesome. I was at my wits end with this dog... though small, she was a v v dangerous addition to the family home. Attacking all visitors big and small and had to be separated at all costs from anyone outside the pack. She was impossible to take for walk. Car sick on every journey short or long. A bundle of stress 24-7. I really was thinking the worst in terms of her future... even contemplating having her put-down, and as an animal lover the thought of this was devastating for me. This book was recommended as a must-read in conjunction with a local dog socialisation class. Jan Fennell has completely reformed the way I treat my dogs with absolutely amazing and immediate results!! After 4 decades of having dogs in my life and dealing with them in a different way, I now follow Jan's methods and can't believe how beneficial my changes have been. Her methods went against all my human instincts and everything I thought I knew. As humans, we treat our dogs with human emotion - but if we change our behaviour to fit in with a dog's way of thinking, everything becomes easier and everyone in the pack is happier (humans and dogs!). My previously troublesome little 2nd dog is facing a very bright future. Buy it. Read it. Spread the word. You will not regret it!
