The ABC's for Beginners & Useful Reminders for Pros

Probably the most valuable work I will read on the practical problems of designing and executing a qualitative interview study. It is usable as an outline and checklist for designing any study of this type. Weiss covers all the bases with a wealth of pertinent examples from his experience. He has managed to take a dry subject and create a readable, interesting piece.

Best introduction to qualitative interviewing

Learning From Strangers is the best introduction to how to do qualitative interviewing that I know of, and it's one of two books that I assign in my course on qualitative research methods (the other is Corrine Glesne's Becoming Qualitative Researchers). It is very readable, but also deeply insightful and informed by Weiss's many years of interviewing. The most valuable part of the book, and one thing that sets it apart from most other books on qualitative interviewing, is that it includes lengthy excerpts from actual interview transcripts, with Weiss's detailed commentary on what worked well and what didn't. The book also has excellent advice on developing interview questions, selecting interviewees, analyzing interview data, and writing the final report.

A valuable "how to interview" guide for researchers

""Learning From Strangers" is a book that will greatly augment any coursework in anthropology, sociology, or education research methods. I rank it right up there with classic works like Powdermaker's "Stranger and Friend", Agar's "The Professional Stranger" and Van Maanen's ""Tales of the Field". This volume is well worth reading for those new to qualitative research methods, as well as for those who might question how well they're doing with interviewing as a data collection method. The author uses a conversational approach as he generously shares and reflects upon his many years of interview experience. This sharing isn't self-serving, but sensitively, (and importantly) covers all situations: the tricky, the awkward, and the difficult. The chapter on "Issues in Interviewing" resonated with me. For example, as I was alone in the field, doing the qualitative research for my dissertation in South Africa, I was astonished at how tiring I found my interviewing to be. I had been discussing the personal histories of rural educators who had themselves been educated under apartheid, and was completely exhausted by the process. Weiss put my mind to rest when he discusses the levels of emotion that are shared between interviewer and respondent ( at page 137). He also debunks some persistent research myths such as the need for a fixed set of questions (the process is iterative), or the so-called "interviewer-respondent match" (the insider-outsider dilemma). Interviewing is a technique that people frequently assume they "can do" but this book highlights the many intricacies of what are fundamentally social interactions undertaken in pusuit of research data. The only improvement I could suggest, and this is owing mainly to its publication date of 1996, would be to include a broader elaboration of computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software, of which there are now many examples of user-friendly software. Of course, one must conduct the interviews first to have any data, so I recommend that you help yourself in that effort by reading this valuable book.

PreSchool-Grade 2 Mayer's third book about nightmares features a feisty girl in blonde pigtails, nightgown, cowboy hat, and boots. When Mom and Dad don't believe that there's a nightmare in the attic, she decides to lasso it and bring it downstairs to show them. The fat friendly dragon-like monster appears with the girl's teddy bear and won't give it back. She pulls it down with the lasso to her parent's room, but it slips away, and she vows to retrieve her bear tomorrow. The predominately blue watercolors with black pen are not as refined as those in Mayer's There's a Nightmare in My Closet (Dial, 1968). The outline and cross-hatching are thicker and resemble the illustrations in Mayer's There's an Alligator Under My Bed (Dial, 1987). The format remains large with creative use of white space and frames. The nightmare is a cream puff of a creature with child-like facial expressions. The story is satisfying, humorous, possibly bibliotherapeutic, and significantly different from previous titles to justify making room on the shelf for this nightmare as well. This is one of my favorites by Mercer Mayer.

I teach preschool aged children and we use this story when talking about fears. When I read it I start in a whispered tone, and when she sees the "something" in the atic I yell at the same time she does. The children jump a mile and laugh like mad. We then take a good look at the "something" and the girl. We all belive the "something" is more scard than the girl. I recomend this and any of Mayer's Little Critter books to any one with children.

Teaches Courage, but Lacks Compassion

I read this book to my children in my best campfire voice and my 3-year-old daughter especially loves it. New situations can be scary, but we should face our fears as this book shows. The main character is a brave young girl who hears something in the attic above her bed. Her parents tell her it is probably just mice, but the little girl knows it is more and she is going to prove it. One night, she gets out of bed and slips into her cowgirl boots. She puts on her hat, grabs her lasso, and heads upstairs to face her nightmare. She manages to lasso the monster and drag him downstairs but he disappears before she can show her parents.
I like that the girl is brave and that she faces her nightmare with courage and determination. I think that is a wonderful lesson for children to learn. What I don't like is that she fights the monster over a teddy bear that she is unwilling to share. The monster never gets mean and actually looks quite sad and frightened, but she shows the creature zero compassion. Instead, she lassos the big gentle beast and drags him against his will being mean to him the whole time. I really dislike that. That is how people often treat people who are different or animals who are defenseless. I try to talk about that when sharing this book with my kids. "Oh that monster just looks lonely!" "That poor monster looks so scared. I bet he just needs a hug", etc.
This was a fun book and is a hit with the kids, but not quite excellent.

In 1975, I was recruited out of school by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Those are the guys on horses with the red coats and "smokey-the-bear" hats. Except that in Canada, they are also the FBI, DEA, CIA and Secret Service all rolled into one.

I was sent for specialized training in Canada and the United States to become an undercover operator. In the past 20 years I worked all over the world, particularly in the United States, posing as a gangster, a drug trafficker and finally as a money launderer. I ran phony businesses in the United States and Canada where I laundered money for drug traffickers and other bad guys. I never got to wear the cool uniform or ride a horse though.

This book is not an autobiography. It's about money laundering. Because of the kind of work I did, I'm not allowed to tell about a lot of the things that I did. But it does have a lot of anecdotes about the time I spent undercover. The book is basically about how organized crime and terrorism are really the same thing and how they rub up against regular people every day.

Not too many people really care about what happens in Canada so I wrote this book with an international audience in mind. I think I spent more time in the U.S. anyway. I tried not to take myself too seriously when I wrote it. There are some funny parts and a few sad ones. And I hope you like it. My friends did. (At least, they said that they did.)

Very, very little information about money laundering

I was very excited to get and read this book. But after I started reading, it became a never ending disappointment. I kept thinking, "maybe it will pick up in a couple of chapters and will have some actual information." However I got to the end and I still hadn't learned anything. In my opinion this was a terrible book for these reasons:

There was hardly any actual information. Mostly the book was full of stories from the author's experiences or just made up stories to try to illustrate the evils of money laundering. Even when the author would talk about something interesting, he would cut off, nearly mid-sentence, and basically say that he can't tell you about that. I understand not wanting to educate the world about the most current forms of money laundering, but being introduced to something and then denied (repeatedly) was very annoying. The author could have wrote about money laundering of the 1960's to 1990's where those techniques don't work anymore, but he just didn't really talk about anything at all. Since he wrote a book titled: "Crime School: Money Laundering: True Crime Meets the World of Business and Finance" I expected him to actually say something about money laundering. He might as well have titled it, "Crime School: How to grow carrots, skydive, and become an astrophysicist" and the title would have been almost as accurate.

The book was poorly written. The table of contents doesn't even match up with the pages in the book. Also, the chapter titles had absolutely nothing to do with what was in those chapters. The best example is in "Bankruptcy of Murder Inc." This chapter doesn't talk about "bankruptcy" or of the infamous "Murder Inc" that contracted out assassinations for the mob.

Five minutes on the internet with your favorite search engine yields more information than reading the entire book! Throughout the entire book the author doesn't even talk about the three stages of money laundering: Placement, Layering, and Integration. Some have praised this book, saying that it is a must read for people in the banking industry to keep from unknowingly helping in money laundering. I also disagree with this because all the author really ever says in the book about this topic is to hire someone else to check your bank to see if you are laundering money. So overall this book was worthless to everyone on every level. I bought this book used for just a couple bucks and I still wish I could get my money back.

A fun, quick, extremely basic, but quite entertaining read; somewhat dated

This writer is tops in entertainment. The tone is very conversational, humorous and kind of "street" in tone. I have recommended this for some young people aspiring to be in law enforcement. It shows that fun and smart and nervy people can have a stimulating career in this sort of thing, and not merely as street cops.

Not a well written book and contains very general information about money laundering that most people are already aware of such as off-shore banking. It is short on specifics, and long on trying to relate the author's experiences in the field. A bit boring.

Excelent book for beginners &/or runners with foot problems.

The most comprehensive book in terms of foot related injuries & pain. Problems are discussed & practical solutions are offered.
Unfortunately, it recommends full sit-ups vs back-friendly crunches & it doesn't sufficiently address iliotibial band syndrome - a very common problem for runners.

Not just for experienced runners

The first chapter of the book, "I tried running once and didn't like it", was inspiring. I am 40 years old and new to running; this book helped me learn how to start running and keep running without serious injury. It doesn't tell you that you need to acquire expensive gear to start, just start slow and easy. It tells you when you do need to get good shoes and provides solid advice on what type and how to buy shows. I have hard to fit feet and the book provides useful and detailed information on how to adjust the fit of running shoes. This book does not provide training programs, but instead helps with treating everything from minor aches to major injuries.

A truly epic, awe-inspiring love story that is a must read!

“The world will break your heart in every way it can. And after your heart is torn into pieces, and the blood quits flowing, the world will laugh on in amusement.”

This review will be short and sweet, because quite frankly, the reader will need to experience every single word that this story has to offer and I don’t want to take away from this truly awe-inspiring love story.

In the long awaited conclusion of the Carnival Series, readers are in for an exciting, nail-biting ride of EPIC proportions. Once again K. B. Nelson has left me utterly speechless and in complete awe. The writing is simply beautiful and the story absolutely amazing. Amusement is so powerful, so intense and so raw it will leave you breathless as you wonder how this story will end. This captivating story is a quick read, but one that you will want to take your time with because you will not want it to end.

Charlie and Blue’s story is one that will remain in my heart for quite some time and I will forever treasure the time that I spent with them on this crazy ‘Carnival’ ride. Thank you K.B. for giving us, the readers and fans of this series, a truly wonderful and at times, heart-wrenching reading experience!

If you haven’t had a chance to witness first-hand the amazing writing ability of the talented K.B. Nelson, then I highly recommend this series – you will not be disappointed.

I just finished up the long awaited (for me, anyway) conclusion of Blue and Charlie's story. Everything follows the right path: A leads to B leads to C until you reach the end, but it all felt so rushed and incomplete. A portion of the book is told in flashbacks, which I didn't really understand, because this book wouldn't hold up as a stand alone. So, it wasn't needed for backstory. It came off as filler. After such a long wait and two release set backs, I was left with the feeling that the author scrambled to put the book out and the story suffered for it.

About the Author

Dr. John Wheeler currently serves as the Director of the Center for Excellence in Early Childhood Learning and Development at East Tennessee State University and Professor of Special Education. His teaching and research interests have centered on the design of instructional and behavioral supports for children with autism and their families and in building capacity in schools located in underserved areas to address the needs of children with autism.� He has co-authored five textbooks in these areas as well as

numerous research studies, invited book chapters and international and national presentations and served as project director and principal investigator on numerous grants aimed at the provision of technical assistance to rural and underserved schools. He is an editorial review board member for the journals Focus on Autism and Other Developmental Disabilities, Education and Training in Autism and Developmental Disabilities and the Journal of the International Association of Special Education.

Dr. Stacy Carter is an Associate Professor of Special Education at Texas Tech University where he is the Coordinator of the Graduate Certificate in Applied Behavior Analysis. Dr. Carter is a Nationally Certified School Psychologist, a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, and a licensed Special Education teacher. His research has focused on assessment and treatment of challenging behaviors with an emphasis on determining interventions that have considerable stakeholder acceptability. He has conducted numerous presentations, published several research studies, authored a resource book on social validity of behavior interventions, and co-authored a textbook on methods of instruction for individuals with autism spectrum disorder. Dr. Carter has worked extensively in schools and other settings providing services to individuals with disabilities.�
