You basically pay for an add

I wanted to buy a book that will teach me something new but instead paid for solicitation to pay more money for seminars, coaching etc...., I guess that's where the money is.
The reviews are excellent and it's very deceiving (calling it "bible" together with the reviews make you think that you will get pure information).

Sorry But You Can Skip This One!

Unfortunately this is not the bible of wholesaling. Lots of generalities and very little, or any, specifics. Example: When Than writes about mailing lists to use in your direct mail campaigns he never tells us where to secure these lists. And so it goes throughout the book. For $18 is a skip. Where do I get a refund?

A distinguished professor of economics at Pepperdine University's Seaver College, Dr. Robert Sexton is a graduate of California Lutheran College. He received his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Colorado. Terrific Series!

I love the Tricky Grammar workbooks and regularly use all three with my students. The succinct instructions for each grammar worksheet generally provide enough information for students to complete the work on their own without further instruction. The sentences used in the grammar exercises are genuinely interesting and students eagerly ask, "Is that true?" regarding the scientific content. (Laughter and "Gross!" are also common reactions.) The additional content includes grammar advice from gremlins, factoids, and joke breaks. Students will often not want me to proceed with the rest of the lesson until they've read any and all extra content on each page.

I introduce the workbook as "tricky," preparing students beforehand that they might see a lot of marks on their papers. I've found this prep talk results in students anxious to prove that they can successfully complete the work. Even students who make a high number of mistakes eagerly ask for more work from this book. I'm not suggesting they'd rather complete grammar than play their favorite games, but amongst my workbooks, this set is very popular.

If your students have had little contact with grammar or struggle when asked to identify all of a particular grammatical concept within a sentence (e.g. Circle all common nouns. Underline all proper nouns.), then I suggest you ignore the grade level of the workbook and begin with the first of the series, sold as Grade 3. I have seen students become much more solid in their grammar identification when they've completed all three workbooks. I now start most grade school students on the first book. I only start students in grades higher than five or students who have already shown a high competence in grammar in the highest workbook or a workbook equal to their grade level. I wish this author had continued to the series into higher grades as well.

I really, really like these books. However, here is where I see weaknesses. I'd like more pages on individual concepts. This would allow students to strengthen weak skills. If a student needed a great deal of help with the first page, she would then have the opportunity to complete an additional page without assistance. A struggling student benefits the most from several pages on the same concept in order to build both skill and confidence. Currently, one page is devoted to each idea, with a review page, front and back, reviewing a combination of the last concepts taught. The other weak point I see with the text is that it ends with a final skills test based on identifying problems or concepts by grammatical term. A successful student could have completed the entire workbook with high marks only to fail the final test because memorizing grammatical terms is never emphasized within the book. In fact, the grammatical terms and rules for each topic are available at the top of the page, so students have no need to put them in longterm memory. However, students are learning the rules. I see the concepts applied correctly in the students' writing outside of the workbook. It's only the terms (e.g. misplaced modifier) that are not being memorized.

I think these are great workbooks for the classroom or at home. I've taught English for 13 years, and I highly recommend the Tricky Grammar series.

Good prep guide for GMAT.

Provides so many good techniques and explains them clearly. You'll find the wrap up at the end of each chapter that will help you to organize what you just read up in your mind.

Good practice and good strategies

This is a really good resource for Critical Reasoning. The best part is that you get access to the Manhattan Online problem sets. Some of these questions are more difficult than the real test, but I guess that's to be expected from all the Manhattan series.

Least helpful of their series

The Manhattan series was the most helpful for me on my GMAT because other GMAT prep books only shows time saving or test taking tips but does not go into details about the various topics which I needed because I don't have a strong quantitative base. In fact, I didn't know even the basic idea of number properties or even odd plus odd is even (must have been asleep in math class) and so these guides were a must for me. Except for the critical reasoning guide, I give them all five stars +++!

Too bad I found these guides too late (just 2 weeks before the exam) and by the time they arrived in the mail, I didn't have time to do any of the practice exercises but I still managed to improve my score from 500 to 640 from just skimming through these guides. 640 may not be a high score, but for someone who didn't know what a cube root is two weeks before the exam, these guides sure did a good job getting me up to speed. In my situation, these guides were heaven sent.

If you're really good with math then they might be too easy and too basic for you. Even then, they would still serve as a nice 'refresher'. They are short and concise and it only took me about an hour or less to skim through each and so they are pricey if you're just using them for a quick review. But if you don't know math like I don't know math, BUY THEM ALL!!! THEY ROCK!

However, their critical reasoning gmat guide did not go into much detail than the chapters of other verbal gmat prep guides out there and so I did not feel it's price was justified at all! The other guides costs lest than this guide and covers all the verbal topics and comes with tips as well. It also arrived after my exam date so I returned it.

Christer Ericson is a senior principal programmer and the tools and technology lead at Sony Computer Entertainment America in Santa Monica. Before joining Sony in 1999, he was a senior programmer at Neversoft Entertainment. Christer received his Masters degree in computer science from Ume� University, Sweden, where he also lectured for several years before moving to the US in 1996. Christer has served on the advisory board for Full Sail's Game Design and Development degree program since 2002. His interests are varied, but he takes a particular interest in program optimization, a topic he has spoken on at the Game Developers Conference.

Great overview of collision detection.

I can't give it 5 stars, because collision detection is a HUGE topic. Not really their fault, but the book is a bit incomplete because of it. There are a few useful algorithms I know of (and have used) that weren't mentioned at all in the book.

It is a great book though. I'm the author of the somewhat popular Chipmunk Physics library, and I learned quite a bit from reading this book. I already knew a lot of the material in the book, but there were a few new ideas that I hope to be able to incorporate into my physics library's collision system. I think this would be a great introductory book for someone wanting to learn about what can be a difficult problem to learn from the Internet alone.

Bravi!

If I had to judge this book by its cover, I would have to give it three stars; although the binding is functional, it's one of the ugliest book covers I can remember. Yet the contents between the two covers is splendid, the language is clear, the grammar is correct, and I found not even one spelling mistake.

This book is well-indexed, which makes perfect sense as much of its content is about finding items. I haven't failed to find something I wanted quickly or to locate something I previously read. Citations are well-annotated, and they are complete enough that he cited someone I used to live in the same building with within my first two hours of reading. There are abundant well-drawn figures, and they usually display a high level of helpfulness.

How long does it take to read the entire contents? For me, about ten hours. I am no career mathematician, but I have been writing code nearly three decades and presently writing my third ray tracer. Naturally one can skip through sections where more detail is offered than needed at the time one is reading, but be cautious about this. Some of my most productive reading came from a chapter I didn't plan to (and still don't plan to) need to use.

As a full table of contents for this book is available elsewhere on the Internet, I won't summarize it here--except to say that when I was the table of contents, I ordered the book immediately and had it delivered the next day, which was a Saturday. I started reading Monday and finished Tuesday, and my time and money were well invested.

As I learned to optimize software more than twenty years ago, an unexpected benefit of this book was a lengthy discussion of how to exploit more contemporary hardware and languages, where the effects such as caching, pipelining, and aliasing must be considered, or a terrible drop in performance can result. Sometimes it's good to read some newer material.

Once in a great while, diagram conventions get distracting and require some unscrambling. For example, a diagram showing Andrew's algorithm for computing complex hulls defines "left" and "right" for an edge exactly opposite the reader's perspective. Another example, some binary search trees have their nodes labeled using sequential letters, where the labels indicated have nothing to do with the keys for each node. To one used to seeing nodes of trees marked with their contents, these figures appear at first glance to be incorrect. While they are not incorrect, I find that this choice of labeling is confusing and disrupts the continuity of reading.

The text is almost always perfectly clear and makes everything very simple. The only exception I noticed was the fourth sentence of the chapter "Convexity-based methods". That particular sentence needs a rewrite from scratch, although reading the rest of the paragraph permits one to recover the author's intent.

I didn't even break the seal on the enclosed CD. There is text in the book to say the CD contains the code fragments from the book, with absolutely no additions or other material. Even if it had other material, I still might not open it.

If I had to give this book a letter grade, it would definitely be an A+, although several friends who don't write code seem less enthusiastic about this particular volume.

Update 5 Nov 2010: I think the denominator in DistPointPlane() on page 127 needs a square root around it, but it's not in the errata yet. I'll email the author.

Excellent code examples and explanation of geometry concepts

This book covers collision detection algorithms of every kind, and the code functions are self contained in particular sections and can be easily inserted into your own code framework. The author does a great job of explaining the principles behind what the code is doing and describing the math and geometry involved. The book's vector and matrix notation is consistent with the coding style, so it is easy to understand how the descriptions relate to the code. I am new to the world of collision detection, but I found I was able to piece together functions from this book to do anything I needed with minimal effort, but still gain a landslide of understanding. This is likely to become one of the most used books on my shelf as I continue to model various scenes in simulation.

About the Author
Sharon Maas was born in Georgetown, Guyana, in 1951 and educated in Guyana and England. After leaving school she worked as a staff journalist at the Guyana Graphic and the Sunday Chronicle in Georgetown. Sharon has always had a great sense of adventure and curiosity about the world we live in, and Guyana could not hold her for long. In 1971 she set off on a year-long backpacking trip around South America. In 1973 she travelled overland to India through Europe, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan, and spent two years in an Ashram in South India.

A ready-made screenplay

A rich, colorful explosion of Indian culture spanning from Madras to Demerara, this novel is so vividly told and so skillfully woven that you'll find yourself visualizing the story as you go along, in full color with surround sound, smells and all.

Three children, two countries, three stories, three different decades - separate, yet cohesively bonded into one epic saga.

Nataraj (Nat), plucked from an orphanage in India by a white doctor, is given the chance to receive a good education, and quickly discovers within himself the power of healing.

Sarojini (Saroj) lives a comfortable life in British Guiana, until she encounters racism and hatred, and repeatedly defies her ethnically blinkered father, having recognized inner beauty in other people despite external appearances.

Savitri is a cook's daughter from Madras, the central character of the book, who despite her strict Indian family, manages to tie herself to the white family who employs her father, leading to a heart-rending sequence of unfortunate events.

Flitting like a butterfly between the three stories, the author explores deep, dark issues of humanity, but these are not permitted to consume the story, as they are beautifully counterbalanced by love and respect, by breathtakingly descriptive passages and exotic settings.

It's a period piece, a geography lesson, a mystery, a tragedy, a drama, a soap opera, but most of all a love story, not only for the central characters, but for the author to pay tribute to two countries that have made their mark in her heart.

If you like sweet, sappy love stories, or rich Indian culture and tradition, or even if you just liked the movie "Monsoon Wedding", this book is highly recommended for you.

A Love story with political overtures

Being Asian, a lawyer and in an arranged marriage myself , I could certainly identify with the conflicts the characters faced: arranged marriages, search for a potential partner by ones parents, conflict of whether or not to defy ones parents in their insistence on having an arranged marriage, trying to understand their arbitary prejudices they held against different castes and creeds. All of these issues are dealt with in the amazing book. Towards the end, you try to figure out how things will be resolved, you rack your brain for possible solutions in order for the characters to be together. It was a sad, emotional, funny, enlightening book to read. Sharon Maas has captured so much in this novel, you root the characters on and are gripped right until the last page. Brilliant - read it.

As Captivating as a Delicate Butterfly in Flight

Of Marriageable Age is a cleverly crafted and intricately woven story dealing with the complexities of arranged marriages.

Sharon Maas has captured a certain innocence in her writing. This story grew inside her and was finally born in an ancient farmhouse where she typed in the depth of winter. Sharon pours the warmth of her very soul into the pages. This story will bathe you in balmy thoughts and entice you into its pages the way the ocean entices you to swim in its depths. She remembers what it feels like to be a child in the comforting safety of a mother's love or how it feels to embrace a moment in time, so thoughtfully, it always clings to your memory.

Her intense power of observation enables her to set up situations, which bring out the characters deepest fears, sublime longings and internal tortures. She creates tension at the end of each chapter, propelling you forward to read the next exciting detail. Each chapter in the first section focuses on one of the three main characters.

This rotation of chapters invites you to follow the lives of Nat, Saroj and Savitri who in the first section are like streams of water moving towards a river. The second and third sections are more like a waterfall in which moments of enlightenment flow through you suddenly, as you realize how these three characters' lives intertwine. Each life is richly textured with cultural details as they move from the innocence of childhood into an adult awareness. The character development is outstanding. As the story grows and changes, hope grows within you that the characters will find the happiness they deserve.

The Blue Morpho butterfly on the cover seems to represent Saroj, who must struggle through countless battles of thought to finally shed the insulation of her old life so she can embrace her destiny. She at first spins protective silk thoughts around herself, trapping herself so she can grow her wings. She is living in British Guiana, South America, in the 60s. I love her free spirit when she emerges from her cocoon, her imagination, her beloved places.

"...she also went there to escape to the seashore, to get a glimpse of the ocean, to run for miles along the Sea Wall, to wade, barefoot and curly-toed, into the foaming sheet of warm brown water when the tide rolled gently in and licked the beach. The ocean was freedom. Standing at its edge and gazing far out into the horizon, eastwards, she felt a deep, yearning ache that rose out of some unknown kernel within her, that reached out, far far out, to that distant horizon, to the unseen shores that lay beyond, and further, to the endlessness of the sky, to the endlessness of time.

...the tower room was all windows, without shade. Open the glass panes and the wind sailed through, a cleansing, vigorous wind that swept away care and uprooted disquiet. Up here you felt tall, free, strong. Up here, nothing could touch you. It was a refuge from the heat of the day, a sanctuary from the pain of living. An escape...." pg. 47, 48

Saroj tries to control her life and hurriedly rushes down paths as they are presented to her. She fights and wriggles free from her controlling father (an orthodox Hindu lawyer) only to see his true intentions years later. She finds a childhood friend named Trixie who seems to understand her rebellion. Trixie rescues her from the tapestry of a deeply rooted tradition.

The men in this story seem more willing to follow tradition, to accept their fate. Nat is adopted by a doctor working in rural India (Madras State, 1947) and not only has the ability to heal, he later has the ability to water thirsty souls and women are drawn to him. He longs to find a woman who will invite him into her secret life. He realizes women are seeking spiritual unity and that true strength is gentle. Women long for a connection of the soul. He also wants to uncover the mystery of his own life.

Savitri understands silence. She lives from the inside and knows that the man she loves is the other part of her soul. Forbidden fruit is irresistible to her, yet she also has the ability to love unconditionally. She is a servant (cook's daughter) of the Lindsays, an English family living in India. She falls in love with the master's son. Her story starts in Madras, India, in 1921. She and David observe one another from a distance, living separate lives, wanting to find some connection that threatens to dissolve them both into a sea of troubles. While the storms of their lives threaten to tear them apart forever, somehow they manage to find a few moments of absolute bliss.

While Nat and Savitri's stories are essential to the plot, Saroj is definitely the main character who evolves through a process of choices and situations thrust upon her by life. Her exuberance for life is woven into thoughtful prose. You enter her world, one which she is trying to abandon. Her very soul desperately cries out not to be tied down to duty. She wants to make her own choices, especially when it comes to choosing a husband, her lover for life.

Standing at the window of her mind, you will observe the most intimate of thoughts. She will capture your heart. Instead of embracing various moment at times, she dreads her fate, the impending doom. She is dramatic and horrified at the thought of being forced into marriage at a marriageable age. She knows that in life, there is one man who is worthy of her intelligence and beauty. Locked in the prison of her father's discontent, the depths of her passion give her mind buoyancy. She at times flies away on her thoughts.

An impressive masterpiece of delicious thoughts. The prose will drip like mango juice into your thirsty soul. It will touch your life in a way no other story ever has.

Some of the tips in the guide include carefully follow all the test registration procedures, focus on your weakest knowledge base, and eat a well-balanced meal before taking the exam. This are general tips but as you get into the guide, you will see how helpful the tips will become on your journey.

In the guide, there are several pages of study content for you to familiarize yourself with, you will learn how to operate the machinery, deal with patients and conduct safety procedures according to regulation standards.

I knew I shouldn't have bought it . It's a skimpy book , "mostly" their ": secrets " and how to take a test ..It will be a 3 hour test with many math "stuff" to do and they do not touch any of that . It is a concise review . I did not read it yet . I am sure there is much much more they could have touched on . . . I will see if I can get my money back .
